Hey all, this is my first post and I thought I'd introduce myself as well as get some advice. First off I'm an English university student and play $10-$30 sng and $5-$50 MTTs. While playing poker I've had a lot of fun and made enough money to pay for the copious drinking that goes on over here, so I obviously think highly of the game.
Anyway, I'm seeking advice about low limit NL tables. Bumhobo gave me some great advice yesterday about the lunatic bluffers at the .50-1 and 1-2 NL tables and how rough it can be, but I was wondering what everybody else has to say on the matter. Is there anybody out there that really cleans house at these levels? If so can you give me some good tips that'll allow me to completely OWN the opponents that I'd face there? Cheers. -
Not to be a prick to you after your first post....but how do you figure that after a couple tips you are going to be "OWNING" opponents? What is someone supposed to tell you in a couple tips? Raise when you think you have the best hand? Fold when you think you are beat?

I was just being a little sarcastic there for a laugh. The game at those levels and above is a little too nuanced for the stellar advice you offered Broad, and I guess I should have been more specific about that. So again, if anyone actually plays these levels and knows how to cope with the challenges (i.e. habitual bluffers, playing cards you would traditionally raise with, etc.)that one commonly finds there I would appreciate some suggestions for effectively dealing with them.

Hey Imperial, welcome to the site.
I'm quite familiar with the low limit bluffers you speak of. As Broadhurst pointed out, its tough to give big picture tips, so here's a small one: Let these habitual bluffers take a shot at the river when you have a hand and they have position. Make medium bets into them on the flop and turn to build a pot worth bluffing at. Then check the river - if you've pegged him right he won't be able to resist throwing all his chips in. If a scare card comes and he bets an amount that is not all in, be very afraid.
The situation in which to use this move does not come up frequently, so be sure to recognize it when it does. This is a risky move that is tough to get comfortable with, so make sure you have the bankroll to be wrong. After enough time at the table you should be able to build an entire arsenal of moves like this one to apply to the many situations you'll see. -
Imperial,
great to see your first post, welcome! -
Thanks. Sorry about last nites tourney; I just clicked in to observe when I saw you get cheated by the turn on your last hand. I think beanie definitely had something to do with that.

im more of a low limit player, every once in awhile i'll play a tourny w/ the "ranked" guys, but i actually find the lower limits harder to play than the higher limits sometimes, just for that fact about so many "bluffers" theres too many swings, i was playing .50/$1 NL the other day and won a $150 pot i had medium pair w/ best kicker and knew the guy was bluffing his small pocket pair, boom took a big pot, but after awhile you start to think all those players are bluffers and you start thinking your hand is better than it actually is, needless to say i basically gave back my winnings.
i have hard times playing in NL cash games for some reason, im pretty good $2/4 $1/2 Limit Player and SNG's are where i make cash consistantly, but i just always bust out at cash games like that, i also need help in that area. -
I know what you mean by the swings. I've had some erratic results at the NL games as well. I usually win a few huge pots and turn a profit or lose a few medium pots and never recover after that. The steadiest returns for me have been at sngs as well. I can't stand limit play because I hate the frustration that comes from being outdrawn repeatedly (that's one reason to like NL--it happens with less frequency and u can more frequently break someone that tries it), which is a good way of pounding your bank roll within a very short time span. I once dropped $100 in winnings at the 1-2 limit 6 seater in less than 15 minutes on made hands that got sucked out by draws...NO FUN, NO FUN at all. Cal, thanks for the tip you posted earlier, I'll definitely give it a shot. Hope that there are more like that posted!

I'm sorry Imperial but there is no subsitute for expereince the only way to learn the game is play the top starting hands and then learn from playing every hand you can so that when you run into situations you know what to do and how to play it . It takes time and I mean alot of time to work your game into something that will make you money constently.
I will tell you that in no-limit cash games that low you want to play the top 20 or so starting hands to see the flop and if you are rasied the pot preflop with anything less then AA KK or QQ then throw your cards in the muck there's always next hand. -
good playing with you today imperial, too bad you got knocked out when you did. You seem like you are on the right track and i have no doubt ill be seeing a lot more of you in the future, hopefully at the final table!
take care
