  1. Awesome read Jen, thanks so much. This is an issue I think may poker players deal with, from pro's to semi-pro's to, hobbyists, and rank amateur's. This hit home for me as I have been concentrating on getting more sleep and putting in better quality of time when I play poker. As a hobbyist with an insatiable passion for poker there have been many times when I was simply playing too much. I am probably not the only one who has fallen asleep in a sng late at night when I was trying to "just play one more".

There are a few tournaments that I really want to play nightly but just cant because when I go deep (not often enough) I am at the FT at 3AM or getting close at 2. And getting up at 7 just sucks. So, I try and plan to play them a few times a week and using the weekend as an opportunity to pursue my dream of FT glory.

I have noticed that when I play and am well rested with good concentration, I play better and consequently tend to achieve better results. Sounds simple, I know, but it is too easy not to do. Thanks again Jen for more insight, I really appreciate your ideas. You always give me something that applies to the whole of my poker experience and I am truly grateful.
  2. I agree with owl too, but it is a good article that is just common sense. This year I started in the real world and early mornings are a pain with min. sleep it just screws your day and when you sit down to play at night it eff's you up even more. So, I stopped playing late at night unfortunately this stops me from playing Bodog's nightly guranteed, a great tourney, and playing some of the smaller size field tournies. I really miss playing all the tournies at night.
  3. I will just say what everybody wants to say to Jennifear.

  4. Interesting, related article from MSNBC today:

Blame boneheaded bets on your tired brain
  5. Yeah, it was a solid article with some great points...I just seem to recall a lesson a couple weeks ago in which a certain "Ms. Fear" stayed up past 3 am working with a certain "Mr. Fatty," but had to get to her day job by 8 am. 5 hours might not be enough to play successful poker, but it's plenty to teach wide-eyed and smart-assed high schoolers.

    Just kidding, Jen.
  6. LOL Fatty... you should have seen what time I finished the article! hehe
  7. Thanks for your kind replies folks!

Let's face it... those of us who like to play at night aren't going to be at our best....

If you are going to be in a tourney (like the Sun Million on stars) that is going to take a long time to finish, be sure you sleep well the night before. It may be the difference of tens of thousands of dollars!
  8. I stayed up all night saturday and then played every tourney on sunday. I fell asleep for 35 min during 2nd hr of 100r to aruba package on sunday. then I won it :)
  9. I agree with Bombo,

I really need to win the Lotto or something so I have more time to persue my dream of being an online poker god and WSOP bracelet winner. I'm somehow guessing playing 4 tournys a week isn't going to cut it.

I also try to stay out of tournaments. Even being up to 1am is way too late, having to be up for work at 6:30 (and, if you aren't focused enough for poker, you aren't doing your best at your job with minimal sleep either).
  10. Man, it's so easy to play when you're half asleep. You just sleep in between hands. Sure, you don't get reads, or pick up on betting patterns, and sure, you're more likely to take preposterous gambles that you would normally not even 'dream' about taking...but it's easy. Plus, yeah, you won't ever, ever, ever win becasue you'll fall asleep FAR before you hit the final table, but still, let's not forget how EASY it is to play while half asleep. :-)
