  1. Excellent post once again Jenn - thanks alot. Unfortunately I recognised way too many of these in my own play. :)
  2. Skinarbie?
  3. It is hard to imagine that some guy flamed you earlier this week for taking time to help others with your posts. I am sure this will be of immeasureable help to many of us.

keep up the unselfish work jennifear !!

  5. Great Article as always!!! However I don't like that you are calling me old with the Johnny1975 reference :)
  6. Some things were on and good, others were off and bad - Such as the betting 2222, pausing before checking, and year in name. 1 reference is mattg1983 - young but doesnt play by seat of his pants. Another reference is apestyles who will put in these bets to fool opponents. Pausing before a check or raise could just be the player is playing multiple games. I would have liked to have read an article with more thought, such as what stakes this works at and when/who these tells work against. Good article but could have more insight. ---This is not a bashing of any sort, just my opinion.
  7. i would agree with zeedustin, and also i feel like judging a players ability by their name is pretty beat...
  8. lol i hope the avatar section was a joke lolol

wtf yeah babies are playing poker lol
  9. This is a great post overall. I just feel some of it could have been left out, i.e. 420 in name means pot head and so on. Also, I usually do some of these things to get the exact opposite effect, so obviously their should be a disclaimer with these. "It depends, but usually . . ", would be a good beginner to each. : )

EDIT: Sorry, didn't even finish reading the whole thing I guess. After reading all the examples, I just wanted to find the thread on it . . .
  10. Thanks Saints! And no I don't think 31 is old!

    :)
  11. Thanks PANDA!

I made sure to include that all tells are not 100% reliable, and what this means, is that you should bias your decisions based on these tells, and perhaps break ties (close decisions between raising and folding etc) using this info
  12. I'm glad you brought this up about the younger players, because I agree that some of the very best players in the world are younger, and there is ample evidence of this. I am by no means saying that all young players suck, as I am younger too :)

I believe young players make the absolute best, and the absolute worst players we see. More frequently it's the latter. So it's a generalization. Let's face it that the vast majority of the not-too-good players are younger.

By no means am I saying throw caution to the wind based on a birthyear, just keep it in mind, and picture your opponent, and a likely thought pattern.
  13. What I was saying was that most children in the avatars are the true children of the player. So if there's a picture of a two-year-old, you can bias towards your opponent being between 25-30 years old, generally.
  14. I think the "birthyear" tell is valuable in both directions...not only do you help identify younger players (who do tend to be looser), but older players as well (who tend to be tighter). Someone who calls themselves "PokerGranny38" isn't very likely to be re-raising with any two, unless that's the name Ari or gbmantis gave themselves on Mansion.

As with any poker advice or strategy, tells are more obvious and easier to take advantage of at the lower levels of the game. You are missing out on opportunities in a $10 SNG if you think "well, BeL0WaB0Ve makes weird raises to throw people off, so my opponent here might be doing the same thing." Jennifear's focus is on winning poker at that level (a level that so many P5ers complain is impossible to beat)...so I don't know why you're expecting her to explicitly state what stakes her strategies are designed for.

If you're looking for poker articles with stated absolutes, Dustin, you're probably gonna be looking for a long time. There's no such thing, especially when it comes to tells. All a tell can do is get from you a 50% confidence level in a decision to a 75% confidence level. To imply that Jennifear's article didn't have a lot of thought or insight because she couldn't provide a 100% guarantee on the least-guaranteed thing in poker is unfair.

Pretty sure she was speaking of lower stakes, and bad players. mattg1983, for example, plays in higher stakes and is a good player. Apestyles, too, is a very good player. Also, these aren't expected to rep 100% of the time. Just part of the overall thought process.

As far as the pausing before a check or bet being multitabling...I think the thing we look for is if they are doing it always, or if this is the first time they did it. If someone is mostly pausing before everything they do, then likely there is nothing strange about it. But, if they've been consistently doing one thing, and then suddently do another, AND, they're a bad player at lower limits, then from a GENERAL point of view, there's a tell.
  16. Always enjoy your articles Jen and think you are very generous to share your insights with us, critics be damned. While I do not use pics of my child(ren) as my avatar, a quiz is in order. My youngest daughter is 8 years old, how old am I?
  17. 17
  18. Nice Article. I use the check/fold button when I multi-table so I will have to stop doing it. People with 420 in their names was funny. I always think lesser of those people for putting 420 in their name. Jennifear what do you think of people who put 69 in their name? I did meet a guy who was actually 69 and the child in his avatar was his grandson.
  19. Def an article for 2-4 and under
  20. great article for one jennifear... but don't be too liberal with the age judment thing..my oldest son is my avatar but im 21 i have a four year old, and 19mo old and another due in march...oh and i'm married, poor, and always tired as well. But thats ok LIVE AND LEARN
  21. Jack that is the insight I expected to see. Maybe the title should read something differently or let it be known its for small stakes. I know it is for small stakes because I read the site and know who she is. Others may not know who jennifear is and may look at the article as sort of childish.
  22. Okay, tough one.

You said youngest. Also you must think the answer will be hard. I'll guess 52. ;)

    Okay, I cheated.

(hint, I used a tell listed in my article to deduce this- can u guess which one?)

If I had just seen a pic of an 8 yr old I woulda guessed 35. If I had seen your teddy ballgame pic, I woulda guessed 55.
  23. Most of the bet speed tells are definitely more reliable at the lowest limits, however this isn't a low-limit only article. You see many of these tells at all stakes!
  24. I agree sparks that you shouldn't be too liberal with the age judgment... it's very tough to write this sort of article because there are no guarantees, only biases with tells.
  25. Most "69" ers aren't serious players, from what I have seen.
  26. Nice well written article.

The tells that you speak of can be found at all stakes online. The lower the stakes, the higher the confidence level imo. One of the best things to take from your article is identifying particluar tells/signals that you are giving off and making the proper adjustments to your own game. Once you become aware of the basic online poker tells, you will then be able to reap the benefits from providing false tells to your educated opponents.
  27. Thats what she said!
  28. Amazing...dead on. 52. Reading your article again now to find the clue. Will come back with edit. EDIT: Damn, birthdate tell in a name on my profile. Oops!
  29. I play at the "low limits" and I always bet weird amounts when the blinds are high, I will do it with AA and J 9, as long as you keep your bets consistent you won't give off a tell. I don't think you can necessarily read too much into pre flop raise amounts unless you have determined a pattern like raises small with weak hands, raises normal with strong hands. I do agree with alot of the tells you can pick up but be aware that there are at least 1 or 2 thinking players at the table even at the lowest limits that could fake one of these tells.
  30. I actually liked this article a lot. I seldolmly read articles from beginning to end, but I did this one, mainly because I kept seeing things I use to do in MTTs. I dont really play them anymore, but its nice to know for future reference.

The only one I thought was a little off was:

    - Failure to Auto-Post in a Game With Antes

Your opponent is likely new to this specific game or just wants to play one or two hands. Most likely a fish.

I play mostly stud ring games, and come across this very much. It could actually mean a couple things.

    1) The player is new and is learning the rules
    2) The Player is multi-tabling. If he doesnt auto post, it means he wants to know when the hand is starting so he can get back and remember the dead upcards. This could mean this person is actually very good and plays a lot.
    3) More of a take on 2. The player is multi tabling, and might be good, but in Stud you need to really pay attention to dead cards and betting patterns. More so than you do in Holdem. If this player is playing 3-4 tables of stud he is going to have weaknesses. He is probably playing only premium hands, split and buried 10s and up, 3 big str8 cards, 3 big flush cards, or rolled trips. He isnt going to get involved in mediocre hands that are going to tie up his time and keep him from other tables. He also isnt paying attention to your betting patterns. If he is playing 4 full ring games, he isnt remembering 28 different players styles. Just something to keep in mind if you play stud.
