  1. Playing JJ in the BB this deep is always tricky, especially when it flops 8 high

How could I have played this differently, or is it a cooler?? (no reads on opponent)

  2. I think there is so much wrong with this hand.

Why are you calling out of position with a mid pair? Presumably it's for one of 2 reasons:

    1) You don't want to waste chips by raising and being called only to face an overcard on the flop and being bet into

    2) You think they are light and you don't want to raise in case a flop comes without an overcard and you figure that you can raise their CB.

This is the cut off raising a 6 handed table... Isn't that standard? WTF are you doing making your life difficult calling out of position with JJ for?

You must 3B here to about 800.

If they call then they probably do not have a better hand than you unless it's QQ/KK/Ak, although AK might 4b shove on you, but they are narrow holdings and at least you have the beginings of some idea where you are. But if you only call then you let all sorts in and you have no idea where you're at, like you, in this hand.

Would you call an out of position pre flop re raise to a fifth of your stack with 88? Maybe?... but if you do raise and if they call then you have to think... with what, must be something? Then when he checks (which he will with trips) and you bet the flop with your overs to the tune of 1500 and he just calls you know to slow down and that they have more than the flop and hopefully you don't go bust or at least get to showdown.

Your play lets you know nothing about your opponants strength and causes you to stack off out of position without any idea of if you're worth a showdown. You have to try to find this out long before showdown...

You may still lose chips but you won't be broke and 88 may just decide a re-raise for a fifth of their stack pre flop isn't worth a flop. Probably not but either way you have a chance of a win or an escape however it turns out.

As played you gave yourself no chance to avoid busting.

  3. I have to say after reading daugton's post with an open mind I feel like I've changed my mind about this hand. Calling seems meh since we have to play a fairly strong pair oop which is really hard to do since there is no way to know where we are in the hand. 3-betting to 800 is great. We get all the lower pairs that could hit a set versus us to fold hopefully and all the weak Kx, Qx and Ax hands that could hit an over card on us if we just call.

Then if he reraises all in over our 800 3bet we can surely make the call since his range consists of AK mostly since I think he would trap AA and KK with a smooth call of the 800 preflop. He might also shove TT and AQ so we are flipping versus his range.

So 3-betting to 800 even bigger like 950 is the right play here without a doubt. You get the hands that might suckout on you on later streets to fold and you have a way better idea where u are in the hand.
