Agreed. I am always very curious about how the big stars got their start. Very interesting read. Thanks to JJ for telling his story.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> -
Why do other forum's people hate all over pocketfives. The other day at a final table when people were bragging about their respective affiliations i simply said "pocket fives represent" and was met with responses such as "f**k pocketfives" and "bax sucks". I thought these forums had the mutual goal of improving the play of their members through discussion, yet they seem full of animosity towards one another. Having said this i do think that 2+2 people are a bunch of whiny bitches, and whoever belongs to nofold.com also sucks at life
-
2+2 was just saying it was poorly written that is all. I enjoyed it though.
2+2 is still the best poker site out there IMO, the first site i go to when i log on -
EXCELLENT INTERVIEW!
JJ awesome turnaround man.
BTW Colson10 is one to inspire me the most also.
maybe I will have as much success as you!!!!
hahaha
GL at the tables -
Anyone else think JJ looks oddly like the nerdy best friend from the movie "Ten things i hate about you" ?
Its striking. If you havent seen it...er...my...girflriend..made me..watch it......damn.
good movie, lol.
mikey. -
Kinda devalues the skill of online poker if some college kid can log on & turn $200 into $100K+ in a matter of months don't you think? The true test is how someone does in the long run though, if he lost all but $3000, it can surely happen again.

I think it's pretty much the same everywhere....people here hate on 2+2, RGP, NWP, etc. As administrators, we try to keep a respectable relationship with the guys who run these sites, and there is no bitterness or rivalry between us.
It's a pretty common psychological phenomenon that people tend to like to associate themselves with a group and band together against another similar group. This was first fully researched when 20 kids were sent to a camp in the 50s and divided into 2 "teams" for the period they were there, only to end up all hating members of the other team, despite the fact that the teams were arbitrarily decided. When they were forced to work together on bigger projects in the last week they were there, they all ended up appreciating each other and the winning team shared their prizes with the losing team.
I have no problem with anyone at 2+2....i am glad many of them stop by sometimes to read our articles and post on our forums. If a couple guys think my writing sucks, that's a-ok with me.
Cheers,
Adam -
Surely you don't really believe what you just wrote. It's not like this "kid" just logged right on and poof there's $100k. He plays and works as hard as anyone and I can vouch for that having been his friend for the better part of a year and going through the same experience myself. I think young people who are intelligent, dedicated, and enjoy what they're doing would surprise you with what they can accomplish in a year's time. Don't go spouting off about how easy it is to win online if you haven't done it. It's really quite difficult and something to be proud of.
Oh and about him losing all but $3000 again, I'd say there's about a .00001% chance of that happening. -
I don't think it's easy to win online or live poker, and i never said that. You always hear that this is a game built on experience, and i find it perplexing that someone can do so well right off the bat. You hear about people that have perfecting their play for decades to get to a professional level. I guess I didn't present my thought clearly in my post, I wasn't knocking JJ or online poker. I just thought this was a game you had to learn, not one you have natural born ability for. Sure, some people are naturally good at some aspects of poker, but to have a knack for the intricacies of online poker tournament play right off the bat doesn't register for me. But WTF would I know, I'm a donk.

I think that the opposite is true. This shows that you get out of poker what you put into it. People like JJ, Gank, and even myself spend countless hours online at multiple tables at a time in order to learn the finer nauances of the game in a matter of months. You could never do this until online poker gained prominance.
-
It seems as though you're misunderstanding. People like JJ and I know many (myself included) did not just sit down one day and say hey I am really freakin good at this. He has spent countless hours playing lower limit tourneys and cash games and studying the game. Many people play so many MTTs in a short period of time that the improvement process is astonishingly quick. Never did I say or mean to imply that JJ had some sick natural ability and it came easy to him.

Reread the article. He took a 500BB shellacking in the party 30/60 over a period of several months. I have been through a couple of similar downswings and you learn an aweful lot about yourself, the game, other players and life in general thru a tough down. It builds a lot of character if you survive.
Sounds like he re-evaluated where his enjoyment and strengths were and focused hard on that bringing success. This is a lot like Fischman who apparently booked more hands of poker in a year online than a lot of players get in over their whole lives.
I'm impressed with JJ and what he has done. My guess is that as long as he keeps a focus, good things will continue.
