  1. I saw my friend make this play the other day and I thought it had not value and was a waste of money. What do you think?

In the live action $1-2 games around here the standard raise is between $6 and $15 depending on how many players are in the pot, stregth of hand, position, etc. But typically no one folds to a raise unless you raise in the $15-$20 range. Your on the button with a hand like J10 suited, middle pocket pair, or 910 suited. Three or four people have already limped in front of you. Is there any value in raising to around $7 to "juice the pot" knowing no one will fold? I guess this is kind of what happens in limit games The range of the limpers is pretty large with people typically limping with hands as strong as ak, jj, etc. and a lot worse.
  2. This is pretty common in live games, primarily because of rake. The house will be dropping $3 on the flop (and and extra $1 if they have a jackpot) plus $1 on the turn. Even if you get 5-7 limpers, that will significantly reduce the amount of money in the pot, making people less likely to play for it, removing some of the value of hands like J10s that can flop big.

If you can get the flop to something worth playing for, it's more likely that TPTK or bottom set will pay of your made straight or flush.
