1) Was this just a cooler on a 9 hi rainbow board, or a donk move not knowing when to fold an overpair this early in the tourney w/ no read. Ive made this type of laydown before, usually QQ/JJ and obv thats much easier, but is this a situation where CLEARLY he has aces or was there enough of a chance that he had QQ/JJ where playing for stacks here is OK?
2) If its a FOLD, when? should I have re-raised pre and folded to the 4th raise when he shoves (assuming he would have)? Or should I have raised the flop (which commits at least hald my starting stack) and folded to a shove then? OR was it fine to call pre and on flop, but fold on the turn or river to his strong bets?
The whole time the hand played out my gut said he had aces, and the lil voice in the back of my head was saying 'another sick stars setup what can i do' but I couldnt pull the trigger on the fold button- convinced myself he could be overplaying QQ or JJ and really thinking he had the best hand (obv w/ 6600 players the Mil is a donkfest especially early). Any input/advice is appreciated, thanks.. -
IMO, in such a big field tourney there are going to be a lot of donks and its going to be VERY tough to make it deep. With that said I think you just gotta hope for the best and go with the hand. I never play the stars million but id assume the play isnt all that great, plus getting a big stack in these tourneys are a huge advantage. that said, with no read I push this

fold preflop

I tend to agree w/ you- altho that play has two drawbacks IMO:
1st- w/ so many donks he's liable to shove a few hands I beat (despite the fact that wer'e deep and its the first level) and I lose a lot of value from a premium hand, and
2nd- it gives me a weak image that I can be pushed off hands easily and my raises (esp. UTG) won't get any respect and I'll be in more tricky/marginal situations not knowing where I stand (although getting played back at COULD be a positive when I do have really strong/made hands)
That being said, I hate busting on the 3rd hand when I can definitely make that fold and preserve 70% of my stack and still have a decent chance to chip up.
Thanks for the input. -
if you are going to lay this hand down at this stage given information and the board, you will never have a chance in this tourney, very ul...but without info, its just a cooler imo
-
Dont lose any sleep over this hand, if the hands were reversed, you would have taken all his money and doubled up.
-
re raise!

You're not getting away from this hand in a tournamant like this unless you have a really rock solid read which comes from knowing the opponent very well. I think it would of been a mistake to fold this at any time of the hand. I don't mind the way you played this, the call instead of reraise preflop is a valid option I think (as is reraising at times), maybe i raise on the flop or turn, but i'm not thinking fold any time here.
-
Haven't you seen Bill Filmaff's Secret System yet? According to his Secret System you have to fold KK preflop if there is a raise in front of you. That is if you want to play perfect poker.
Serisouly though this exact same situation happened to me in the Poker stars Sunday Million about 4 months ago. Only I had the AA and my opponent had KK. He raised in first position and it was folded around to me. I reraised him on the cutoff. He moved all in and I immediately called. Of course the flop brought a freaking King. This was 10 minutes into the tournament and this was the first hand I played. Needless to say it was an early and dissapointing exit. But with AA and KK I like to get all my money in preflop. -
The cold call of the turn imo is an amateur play you have two correct decisions to choose from.
Fold (As the board has paired and he could have easily made his full house) Push all in and put he burden back on him..
So he's got either AA, KK, QQ, JJ, 1010 or 99 (88 but unlikely)
So you are behind AA and 99.
You can beat QQ, JJ and 1010 only.
The bet on the turn he is implying that he has Aces more than any other hand... Correct decision is to fold the turn, given the info.
Not reraising preflop didn't help you.. If you reraise you find out is he has Aces 80% of the time. As if they reraised you once they may reshove.. 4th shove = Aces.

Thanks for the input everyone- even though the re-pop from the SB was screaming extreme strength, in a tourney like this with a huge field, poor structure, and no reads on the player, I think the consensus is I should have gotten it all in pre or on the flop at latest and "taken my cooler like a man."
Timbo,
As played, I disagree that the only options are pushing or folding the turn. If he is a big donkey (like I said no reads, so its possible) and he is just bluffing a hand like AK or overplaying a hand like TT/JJ/QQ or any other hand I beat, there is a slight chance he folds if I shove the turn, and I think the chance of him folding anything thats beating me is very slim, so I dont see how shoving THE TURN is correct at all. I think Im definitely way ahead or way behind here, (95%+ chance that one of us is drawing to 2 outs). so not too afraid of getting outdrawn (If he played JT, the only real draw on the board, like this and he hits the river, then nh wp gg- not my tourney)
IMO, Calling or folding are the only options..
By just calling, I wanted him to continue bluffing/overplaying hands I beat on the river, and hoped that he MIGHT check the one vulnerable hand that does beat me on the river, AA. The other option on the TURN is folding, which, as played, I agree MIGHT be optimal, especially if I knew the player better.
IMHO
ps.. sick sick sunday for me, busted w/ Th8h all in on T82 flop vs. AK and JT, runner runner 99 to counterfeit my 2 pr in the FTP 350K (1st level, 70% fav. to triple up), and later in FTP $18K had a set of tens cracked by runner runner flush (A3).. F Poker -
Maybe there should be a FORUM called (K-K vs A-A)
These threads are cluttering the boards of bad beat stories like this KK vs AA hand. Ugh. -
I disagree his bet on the turn was too big to just smooth call.. Its one third of ur stack, so u need to make a tough decision, calling commits you more to the pot than folding does. so he's put u to a tough decision push or fold. There is no value in calling with unimproved Kings. He may fold if he's an idiot there are some out there. You either have the best hand or u don't.. And u called the river.. so

Aces Vs. Kings sucks but part of the game. Can't imagine that you will be successful long run by laying down kings peflop. A lot of people push in that situation with AK or ace rag. Not saying the outcome would be different, but I am not laying down kings preflop, unless it is an obvious bubble situation. Early on, gonna play 'em and take my chances.

ugh , i hate that. ul.. i never fold kings
