Congresswoman Moore,
I was disappointed to see you voted yes on HR 4411 the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. I was also surprised by your vote considering that it is a republican bill that prohibits what I can do with my hard earned income.
As an of age responsible recreational poker player, I find it troubling you feel it necessary to decide how I can spend my money. Even more troubling when you consider I can simply drive to the Menomonee Valley and play at Potawatomi Casino. The difference being online poker sites offer me lower stakes at which I can play at more comfortably and responsibly--an option not afforded to me the local casino. Another difference is the Potawatomi tribe and other nation wide casino's contributions to political campaigns. The later being the more significant difference I imagine.
If you are anti-gambling I can understand that but the bill itself is flawed. Horse betting and Internet lotteries are exempt in HR 4411. What makes playing poker wrong and playing the ponies right?
If the United States House of Representatives is interested in saving me from myself I suggest you start by going after big tobacco. Of course I can understand how stopping online poker can come before stopping the sale of a product that has lead to the death of hundreds of thousands of Americans.
Hopefully if the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act reaches the floor of the Senate Senators Feingold and Kohl will do a much better job of representing me and protecting my rights better then you have today.
Sincerely,
Ryan Francis
I suggest if your representative voted for HR 4411 you send an email voicing your displeasure. If, god forbid, this bill passes the senate congress will then conference so they have an identical bill and the house and senate will revote on it. It is important for your congressperson to know you disagree with their vote. -
Well written
-
lol, she's a woman
they aren't allowed to vote in congress, silly!
j/k obv -
My email and phone call to my rep after the vote was much more spirited and lively. I had second thoughts afterwards and now fear that men in black may becoming to eliminate me.
Either way, he was very sure of my stance on this issue, my displeasure with his vote, and my commitment to make sure he is not my rep next time around. -
*Knock, knock*
"Mr. Anderson?" -
great job, I wrote my some letters today as well. I hope everyone does!
-
it is a great job, though I wouldn't bank on Kyl representing him any better. He was the first one on this train ten years ago.
Anyone in Philly, whether Chaka Fattah is your rep or not, call because word is Fattah is planning on running for mayor. -
Very well done Ryan. I'll be doing the same to Ms. Moore. I got a generic response back from Senator Feingold saying he'll be letting me know his thoughts on this issue. No word from anyone else yet though.
Keep the faith!

is there a way we can see which way our congressman voted?
-
I gotta say that was very well written. You came across as an intelligent person. You are someone i would want fighting for my cause. anybody that sends long rants and fuckoff type messages to their congress people are just adding fuel to the fire. I think that the US government needs to realize that internet gambling is not only done by degenerates. There are Dr's, lawyers, accountants and every other professional imaginable playing online gambling. that has to be well represented.
-
c/pasting this letter to send
-
I hope you are not insinuating that I am a degenerate or that I give the impression that poker players are.
I am a well versed, well spoken individual and write some pretty nifty letters if I do say so myself.
I just chose to challenge my rep on many particular points of fact, I argued them vigorously and also let him know that I would be proactive in his next election. This is something I think all of them should know, whether it is said outright or implied. -
what?? what are u talking about....all i said is that i am copying and pasting ryans letter cuz i think it's good and sending it, i have no clue what u are talkgina bout
-
i think he is talking about to me...
i was more referring to some long ass post i read a couple of days ago that took 20 minutes to read where all the guy did was swear and say how is moving to Canada....
Should have been more clear about that.
My main point is about how the original poster articulated his point very well with logical, debatable points. A congressman/woman has to address someone like him that brings up valid arguments and does not attack the congressman/woman presonally or use vulgar language.
Personally, I live in Canada but i care about this stuff just as much as any american. if the sites lose Americans players, I question whether or not they can exist. -
Mr. Bluesman....I really do not think we need to worry about Russ Feingold's vote on this matter. Russ has been a huge advocate of civil rights and not allowing the government intrude on privacy. All you have to do to see the evidence of that is he was the ONLY SENATOR who voted against the Patriot Act for those vary reasons. I do not think he would vote for a law that would not allow Americans the ability to go to certain websites.
On a side note sad to see your Congressman vote for it. Just glad Tammy Baldwin voted against it. God Bless Liberalism and Madison. -
Very well written. I am shocked at this administration and their "big govt. policies". While Bush ran on no nation building, less government, and fiscal responsibility the GOP under his watch has been nation building, spent more money than Lyndon Johnson, and is adament on the government intruding on all kinds of social issues. 9/11 is a separate issue and had no to little bearing on these issues despite the party line excuse of 9/11 for these policies. Harry Truman played poker during WWII on Navy ships! Write your congressman, this is not only an intrusion on your rights it is a greater movement of more government intrusion on your basic rights that this country was created to avoid! Poker has nothing to do with terrororism and drug smuggling, what a joke!
-
hey brad... i'm not too worried about Feingold either... only reason i mentioned him is his was the only response i've received so far. as much as a politician's past voting indicates how their likely to vote in the future, I don't think we should rely on that alone. they need to hear our voices even if we believe they are already on our side.
maybe we should have Ms. Baldwin give Ms. Moore a call and talk some sense into her. :)

Dear Congressman Lynch, I am sorry to say that due to your vote on the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, I will be unable to vote for you in the next election. You were one of only 2 members of the House from Massachusetts to vote in favor of the bill. This will be my first election voting in your district, unfortunately, this was a major issue for me. Good luck in the future.

Ok, reality check for just a moment...this is politics, which is really the business of pleasing the greatest number of registered voters.
To be honest, I do not know how the bill didnt pass 4677421442-0.
"We are proposing a bill that attempts to reduce the number of children who steal from their parents and become degenrate compulsive gamblers. Voting in support of this bill is a vote for our innocent youth and for the hard working people, where a vote opposing it supports vice, promotes unsavory behaviour, supports family tension, supports tax evasion, and supports people who make livings preying on our children."
Sure people can blah blah about freedom and capitalism and how poker is no different then wall street or anything else where money is at stake, and they could be DEAD right...but politicians who have to vote with reelection in mind have no chance of rejecting the bill...zero.
sheets -
I DISAGREE! Any bill that permits Online HorseBetting and Lottery does not protect children from stealing from their parents and becoming degenerate compulsive gamblers. end of story.
-
yeah i know...
its all about imagery to the masses... and all the masses will be told is "Poker/Gambling"... all the while they will never hear of the horsebetting and other stuff. And that itself makes your points valid.
but the bill doesn't protect shit in actuality. -
Sheets man, you should never have a defeatist attitude about the politics. I know you don't tilt off your chips after a badbeat. It will probably take a financial crisis for America to wake up and reform our government, but I will never accept the hard right church wackos of Lou Dobson or the other extreme of government unions running America. ESPN doesn't get great ratings, because America thinks poker should be banned. You have a loud minority running this country on a lot of issues, because the majority is disinterested or discouraged.
-
Dear Mr. Davis,
I was very disappointed to learn that you voted in favor of this legislation (H.R. 4411).
I have supported you at the polls since your very first campaign and have always thought of you as someone that demanded responsible and efficient Government for its citizens. Yet you cast your vote in favor of a silly and badly flawed piece of legislation that effectively bans a game of skill, poker, but allows for internet betting on horseracing, lotteries and fantasy sports.
In this matter, we should be following the leads of other nations, such as England, by regulating and taxing online gaming, not banning it.
It's time for certain clueless members of Congress (a certain Virginia congressman associated with H.R. 4777 immediately comes to mind) to understand that this thing called the Internet is here to stay, and many of us use it to make purchases (that we pay taxes on), to pay our bills electronically, to manage our stock investments, and yes, to play games, such as poker. And the vast majority of us do it very responsibly.
I do not need Congress to be my moral compass. Playing poker online is no different than buying a Virginia state lottery ticket at the local convenience store, making a trip to a casino in Las Vegas or Atlantic City, or placing a bet on a horse race at Colonial Downs.
Sincerely, -
I live in Santa Monica and sent an e-mail to Henry Waxman several months ago. He voted for HR4411. I just sent him an e-mail telling him he would not get my vote in any future election. The problem is that he's in a safe district.
Sen Feinstein wrote back and said she supports the bill. I like DiFi but she will not get my vote in the future. I think Boxer is moron and I can't stand her. I don't even want to write her. -
RyanFarve, your letter to your congress women about HR 4411 is all for not. No where in HR 44111 is there any language about online poker. In fact, a article written on cardplayer.com shows why people are confused about this new bill. Here is a little snippit from the article itself.
Poker Players Are Not at Risk
The first thing to note is that the bill does not prohibit a poker enthusiast from playing online poker. One Democrat introduced such an amendment to demonstrate the hypocrisy of the bill, but the amendment failed. There is no mention of the poker player in the bill nor any penalty associated with playing poker.

here is a link to the rest of the article for those of you who have not read it. I highly recommend everyone to read it, because it will clrearify some of the confusion with this bill.
