OK so here is an excerpt of a thread on Boards.ie, irish poker forum, im banned for life for telling a moderator to "go F**K a goat". Just goes to show Steve Carrell/Will Ferrell comedy distinctly underappreciated!!
<span>"Go f**k a goat" - "dude why are you always telling me to go f**k a goat"</span>. If that's not Oscar winning script writing then i dont know what is!!
Anyway the extract is below - the thread author ive never met in real life but is supposed to be extremely good. I have a good grasp (no expertise) of the mathematical side of the game, odds, implied odds etc but ......
"He was playing a hand where he called a raise with AJ and flop came J high.
Dude bets near half the pot and my friend raises him.
I told him I dont like the raise here much because its not the best play (if he does it all the time) and I dont know what happened but eventually I said I rather raise with 78 there than with AJ.
He then proceeded to tell me that I dont have a clue what im talking about and to suggest that a raise with 78 on 2 3 J is better than to raise with AJ on the same board just shows how clueless I am.
I explained where I was coming from and that the <span>raise with 78 has a better expectation than the raise with AJ</span> but he insisted that I didnt know what I was talking about and that there is no way that I could be right or convince him at all that what I said had any merits at all.
I then got in to a discussion of the theory behind semi bluffing but then again when I said I would often check behind with AcKc on Tc 9h 2c but bet with 5h6h for example on the same board he started to call me mad and again said that there is no way I could be right here."
I think what he's trying to say is raising with that type of hand to a pre-flop raise, you're only gonna be called or reraised by a better hand or get inferior hands (TT - 77) to pass...... i dunno, maybe im too tired and not getting this but how can the expectation of 78 be better here? Is he saying raising with any 2 given cards, no pair no draw (ie. bluffing) is better than raising with TPTK? I knew i should drink more before reading this shit, always makes sense when im drunk! -
I think your final analysis of what he was trying to say was correct. FWIW. I think raising here in that spot is very dependent on one's opponent. If my opponent is a rock then its probably not the best idea, but if he is frequently raising hands like QTS KJos A9, and/or C-bets every hand then its not a bad play at all. The 78 arguement is bunk though really unless you intend to put more money in the pot with AJ by either calling a reraise or calling another bet on the river. What i mean is that if your raise is a feeler and you intend to fold to resistance then the 78 and AJ would have the same EV most of the time. AJ might be better in the sense that you may just get a call by say TT or 99. Just my 2 cents.
