1. I had just been out drinking with friends when I thought I would drop by my local casino on the way home to play some cash games.

Now I would like to think I could get away from this if I was sober and definitely if my stack was deeper.

This was Pot Limit Holdem, blinds were £3 and £3. I was playing higher than I normally would and had bought in pretty short (£200 where most of the table had stacks >£500). I had about £220 at the time of the hand.

I had only played about 5 hands so didn’t have any reads. I will put the details as best I can remember – like I said, I had quite a few drinks before hand, although I wasn’t toooo drunk. Anyway, the hand was raised to £9 from middle position, called by the button and I called from BB with AQs. (Didn’t want to play a large pot OOP)

Flop comes Q A K rainbow. I lead out for around £15 – initial raiser folds and button raises to £40. I call. Turn comes a blank and I check and button bets £100 into a £110 pot. I have about £170 behind and move in and button calls. River is a blank and the button turns over AK to win the pot.

Could you lay this down? I still don’t know if I could get away from it or not if I wasn’t half cut – mainly because of my short stack. Thinking about it, the hands I could beat are AJ, A10, KQ, JJ, 1010, maybe KJ and K10 or a complete bluff. But I think I was put off by the smooth call from the button as I would expect a re-raise from AA, KK or QQ and usually AK, which apart from J10 are the only hands that have me crushed. J10 is probably the hand I should have feared most although it was played very fast for the nuts. (I don’t think there was a flush draw on board, but maybe my memory is off).

Did I play this hand ok? Should I have lead the turn and folded to a reraise? The more I think about it I think I was destined to go broke because of my short stack, but may have been able to get away with a deeper stack. I guess this shows the power of calling in position with AK.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

  2. Normally, top & bottom pair can be hard to get away from...but I think this one's a fairly easy fold, possibly even on the flop. What hand is the button raising 25 with that you can beat? Unless he stinks, he's not doing it with a worse A...AJ or AT, betting the gutshot, if he's been really aggressive (which you don't know). The only logical hand is KQ, which is one hand you can beat out of AA, KK, QQ, AK or JT that have you dominated.

Once he fires out big on the turn, you have to know that you're way behind here, even though it can be REALLY hard to tell yourself that two pair is no good. I feel your pain here.

  3. Thanks Grapsfan - I think you're right there. I think the only realistic hand that I beat that the button would raise on the flop is KQ. I could have perhaps min re-raised on the flop and folded to resistance or check folded the turn. I may even have seen a free river with the button fearing a straight.
