Was playing at a cash table in the casino at the $2/$5 NL table ($200-$500 buyin).
I have around $1,200 in front of me... There is a guy on the table who dumped around $400 to me a few hands back and was raising any pot that I had limped into.
He is UTG and makes it $25 to go... 2 callers and comes to me with A4 and I smooth call on the button.
Flop comes A J 4 (rainbow)
Raiser makes it $150
folds around to the player before me who reluctantly puts the remaining $86 of his chips in...
What is the right move here? (he has around $600 left on him) -
umm...raise?
EDIT: raise to 400$ -
Um...Fold A4 pre to an UTG raiser and 2 callers?
-
The reason I called was because I know if I hit this guy is going to pay me off.
On the button with a massive stack I can justify a call to hit something. -
so what did you do? call, and he binked a jack on the turn counterfeiting your two pair and you lost a 1k pot?
-
How often are you going to hit 2 pr, the wheel, or 44x flop to make this call profitable in the long run? Even if you do, you're going to have to bet the flop hard, and with the board that fell, there are a lot of cards that will make you cringe on the turn.

I put him on AK at best... so I just shoved it in hoping he would fold as based on my past experiences when I flop 2 pair I usually get outdrawn.
He thinks about it for a long time and I ask him if he has AK and he says yes... and I tell him it is an easy fold...
He ends up calling... doesnt show his hand and turn and river was a 6 and 8... he mucks... says he had AK -
I called preflop for the sole purpose of spiking something so this guy would pay me off. I know the turn and river would make me cringe hence the smooth call wasnt the best move. Considering he had another $450 and the pot was at around $300 I was happy with the pot and thought he could fold his AK/AQ...
-
If you wanted a worse hand to fold you probably shouldn't be playing.
-
The right move is to not play that trash....no wonder he was raising you every time you limped. Do that with 3-4, not A-4.
-
that is just ass-backwards thinking... you put him on AK so your trying to talk him out of calling because your scared he will hit and bad beat you? That just doesn't make any sense.

also you just contradict yourself with that statement right there... You called to spike and get paid off big, so then you do hit a big hand and you don't want action.

Just something to think about it.
