I've been hanging aroud P5s for awhile and thought I'd introduce myself before I started posting. I play for fun, and I have no desire to ever give up my job and play full time. I play a few MTTs a week and 2-5 sit & go's a day. Occassionally, I'll play in a cash game.
I basically started playing online with less than zero knowledge. I had a friend tell me she was making money on party poker and that it wasn't a scam. She kept telling me to sign up because of the referral bonus, so I did. She also told me the rules of hold 'em. I went straight to an Omaha ring game, not knowing the difference, and lost half my first deposit. After she explained that I needed to play Texas Hold 'em, I lost the rest of my stack and redeposited. I was the guy who kept having to go to the hand rankings to see if a flush beat a straight.
My first inkling that you could really learn something came from the WPT Poker by the Book Tournament. I saw it and figured I'd buy the book written by the winner. That's how I got a copy of A Theory of Poker. Amazon later recommended the Harrington books, and they were a real eye opener. They also convinced me to stop playing limit and try no limit.
My second good experience came when Party wouldn't let me play on their site anymore. I was was sent to India for work and wanted to play online poker at night. Well, since their support staff is there they block people from playing there. So I tried Full Tilt and stars and decided Stars was for me. I lost money on Stars at first because I was so used to Party's crappy blind structure (back when they went up every 10 hands) and I foolishly started going to panic mode whenever my M dropped below 20 (I figured green zone is good, everything else is bad).
I did manage to start winning in Stars SNGs and then I went into the red- from up $250 to down $250 in SNGs. I thought I'd have to figure something out or stop playing because losing is no fun. I remembered an episode of the Circuit podcast that had the PXF guys on it, so I joined. After joining and watching the videos, I was able to see everything I had read about in action. I'm really glad that I joined PXF. My SNGs are back in the black and I haven't played many tourneys lately because of work, but I have had a few decent results, by my standards. So, it's been around a year and a half since my first Party Poker deposit and I probably am still a little bit in the red from my donkey days at Party.
I found Pocket Fives after playing with someone who had a P5's avatar and I've enjoyed it a lot. It is good to see that winning isn't completely random and that there are consistent winners out there. Anyway, I hate Party Poker and players with "420" in their names and I like just about everything else about online poker. -
Cool screenname (only reason I read this long-ass post! hehe)
