Greetings:
My name is Randy Castonguay and I am the Massachusetts Representative for the Poker Players Alliance.
Recently, Governor Deval Patrick proposed a bill (H.4307) that seeks to expand casino gambling in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This bill also includes a proposition that would make it a crime for you to play poker on the Internet (See: Section 15(h)(2)(i)). Under this provision, violators will be subject to a maximum term of 2 years in the house of correction, a fine of $25,000, or both. Ironically, H.4307 is pro-casino gambling legislation, yet it makes Internet gaming a crime. This is an unacceptable double-standard!
The Poker Players Alliance is committed to assisting Massachusetts poker players by bringing attention to this attack on our rights; however, we cannot do this alone. We need your help and are asking that you send letters to Governor Deval Patrick, your local State Representative and your State Senator. We have provided a standard letter which will automatically be sent to the above politicians. We encourage you to personalize the letter by adding your own comments. We cannot stress enough how important it is for you to make your voice heard.
Protect poker and send your letter today by visiting http://capwiz.com/pokerplayersallian...61&type=ML
This alert is specifically for poker players from Massachusetts who want to protect their rights.
We will update you on this situation as information becomes available to us. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at ma@pokerplayersalliance.org.
All In,
Randy Castonguay

Im sure the republicans are somehow trying to find a connection with the increase of professional poker players and the economy going in the toilet lol. Dont you get it people! If all poker players were working at mcdonalds, the world would be a much better place

I heard about this a few days ago. After thinking about this for a while I really don't see any way to stop this from happening. Does anyone have any ideas?
-
Ummm.... Governor Patrick is a democrat.
Obviously the brick and mortor lobby got their way.
Gee, I wonder how that happened with a principled righteous democrat in office.
Oh wait... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ knows no party. -

-

the fallout of the U.S government criminalizing online
poker would have trickle down effect to other entities
on the internet.Once, successfully at showing it's teeth,
it would be a matter of time that it sates it's appetite
by extracting and passing a user fee.So a win for online
poker is a win for everyone. -
this is bs.....SEND THOSE LETTER BOYSSSSSSSSSSSS
-
I heard about this a week or two ago and I could`nt quite grasp it.They are making a bill to illeagalize gambling on a bill that is trying to leagalize gambling.Does this sound stupid to anyone else?

We have made some incredible headway at the PPA in regards to this proposed bill. I sent an alert out last week to all MA PPA members and in 2 days we sent out over 1700 letters to legislators and the Governor. Many of the legislators had no idea this language (the criminalization of online poker players) even existed in the bill. As the MA State Director for the PPA, I am organizing a concerted effort to ensure that: a) all legislators are aware of the language contained in the bill; b) all MA online poker players learn about the proposed bill; c) the MA media is educated about the bill and the overt double standard the bill present sas well as its utter hypocrisy the bill poses; and finally that the Governor is made aware that we will not allow this attack on our rights as poker players to go unchallenged.
Our first step is what I have outlined in my initial thread. I need as many MA residents to send letters to their legislators as possible, this should also include letters from your spouses, significant others and friends as well. The more letters that these legislators receive, the more likely they will take this issue seriously. Remember, in politics, numbers make a difference.
Now, I have personally spoken to several legislators as well as the Governors staff. The overwhelming majority of the legislators have indicated that they will NOT support the bill as it is written. They want to see the section that I have outlined in my previous thread removed altogether. While this is great news for us, it does not mean in anyway that we should let up on our letter writing campaign. I am working very closely with John Pappas (Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance) and we will be monitoring and taking appropriate action to any new developments in this bill as well as keeping a steady amount of pressure on those legislators that seem to be waffling.
After Governor Patrick learned of the PPA's involvement on this issue, he has sought to invoke the bill as an "emergency law". This status is generally reserved for bills that are actual "emergencies", so it's clear that Governor Patrick recognizes that he is losing ground to us. John Pappas is meeting with the Governors staff and is asking them to remove this section from the bill entirely with the very realistic threat that we will NOT support the rest of his bill otherwise.
I am somewhat concerned that folks are making this issue about "party politics". United we stand, divided we fall...Please, for the sake of saving the game we love so much, forget about party politics and the quibbling over which party did what to whom and so forth. If we fight this attack on our rights TOGETHER, we stand a much better chance than would by making this a "Party Issue". We can get this language from the bill completely extricated if we ALL fight this TOGETHER. This bill is far too important to let it slip through the cracks. I therfore beg of you to please not make this issue about party politics, because both sides; Republicans and Democrats alike have hurt us in one way or another throughout the course of the ongoing attack on poker, period!
I am devoting a full 60 hours a week on this effort. I receive about 75-100 emails per day from concerned MA poker players on this issue and I also field about 15-20 phone calls per day about it as well. So, I am on this. As your MA State Director for the PPA, I promise you that I will do everything in my power, and will devote as much time as neccessary to ensure that we prevail here.
Additionally, I am eager to listen to any new ideas, and open for any and all suggestions. Anyone may contact me via email at: ma@pokerplayersalliance.org. I'll answer all queries as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that I do receive a volume of emails so the turnaround time is generally 24-48 hours. Possibly sooner if the urgency of the email warrants a quick reply.
Thank you all for taking this matter so seriously and I look forward to defeating this section of the bill with all of your help.
All In,
Randy C~

What do you expect from a state that re-elects Ted Kennedy?

LOL-funniest thing I have read on here in a couple of days.

Special Interest + Bribe Money(Campaign Donations or Favors) = BS
It always amazes me how blatant some politicians are in regards to supporting special interest groups to the detriment of the public.
It is clearly obvious that making online poker illegal in the same bill that legalizes live poker is hypocritical and stems from money/favors changing hands.
Maybe the Governor would do better if he didn't let Harrah's write the legislation he proposes. -
This wouldn't be an issue if Harrah's was able to run its own online poker site.

<SPAN class=mw-headline>Wikepedia has some interesting comments about this Governor. I have posted the controversies section here but here is a link to his complete bio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deval_Patrick
Controversies</SPAN>
In the early months of Patrick's administration a series of decisions the governor later conceded as missteps have brought substantial unfavorable press. These include spending almost $11,000 on drapery for the governor's state house suite, changing the state's customary car lease from a Crown Victoria to a Cadillac, and hiring a staff assistant (who had previously helped chair his election campaign) for the Commonwealth's first lady at an annual salary of almost $75,000. Emerging from a weekend of working on the state's budget and calling for cuts in services to taxpayers, Patrick responded in a February 20, 2007 press conference that "I realize I cannot in good conscience ask the agencies to make those choices without being willing to make them myself,"[18] Patrick subsequently reimbursed the Commonwealth for the cost of the drapery and furniture purchased for the state house, and the additional monthly difference in his car lease.[18] First Lady Diane Patrick's staff assistant, Amy Gorin, resigned. [19] Later in the same month Patrick again came under fire, this time for contacting Citigroup Executive Committee chair, and former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin on behalf of the financially beleaguered mortgage company Ameriquest, a subsidiary of ACC Capital Holdings of which Patrick is a former board member. Both Citigroup and ACC Capital Holdings have substantial holdings in Massachusetts.[20] Patrick attempted to deflect criticism claiming he was calling not as governor but as a private citizen. Later Patrick backed down, stating "I appreciate that I should not have made the call. I regret the mistake."[20]
Patrick's Sep. 11 memorial service speech in 2007 caused a controversy as well. Among other things, he said "It was a mean and nasty and bitter attack on the United States. But it was also about the failure of human beings to understand each other and to learn to love each other. It seems to me that lesson at that morning is something that we must carry with us every day." This was criticized by several newspapers as well as some relatives of the victims. Jim Ogonowski, a brother of the 9/11 victim and a congressional candidate called the comments "completely inappropriate." [21][22]
During the election, Patrick's membership in the historically elitist Fly Club drew the sincerity of his progressive and populist political mantra into question. [23] Patrick claims to have left the club in 1983, when he realized the discrepancy. Still, the criticism he drew could be compared to that of his Democratic colleague, Ted Kennedy, for membership in another final club while at Harvard. -
I live in western mass and sent your letter to Patrick and my state rep and senator. Got a fairly uncommited reply from my rep and no reply yet from the pther 2. I figure I will make a round of phone calls today as well. Any other suggestions?

People need to understand that the move against online poker comes mostly from land-based casino companies.
-
They obv are not trying to hide the fact that they know online poker will take away revenue from brick and mortar casino. Taxachusetts will get more money from taxing the casino by illegalizing online gambling. Go play live if they stop online poker, its easier to win there anyway...

God you American's got some problems....such a protectionist state you guys are....."America, Land of the Free" .... GTFO!!!!
And because of you guys, our lovely new Conservative government in Canada who kisses ass to Bush with your current government's stupid right wing fanatical Christian idealogy that our lovely conservatives will copy, is going just follow in the same footsteps as the US....and eventually ban online poker too...
Bravo USA...you guys set such good examples for everyone in North America, while Europeans know how to be liberal and live life.....
You're stupid War on Drugs never worked and neither will this War on Online Gambling....
You're country is almost bankrupt....I think you guys should be more worried about that, rather than trying to ban poker.... -
The Govenor who brought casino gambling to Louisiana is
now doing 10 yrs in a federal prison for kickbacks and
outright bribes from the casinos he sold out to..
But just as the other poster said in a state that continually
re-elects Ted and John i doubt this Govenor thinks bribes
and kickbacks are illegal... -
I travel to lots of different countries. What really amazes me about places like Toronto, Canada is how they desperatley want to be like the USA. Its Ironic that they crit. the USA but try so hard to copy us....LOL
-
Canada......
The 51st State
Thanks for pointing out that goverment officials are corrupt, and the only interest served are for those in power. Imagine that, green is the only color that matters...... huh
Just be glad Bush is looking for WMD's above our northern borders.

" After Governor Patrick learned of the PPA's involvement on this issue, he has sought to invoke the bill as an "emergency law". "
Nothing like the citizens of MA knowing their governor considers their right to gamble an emergency, but just not on the internet!!! -
This is accualy a wake up call to people who think Democrates winning in '08 means all is safe!!! Cash makes politicians into puppets nomatter what party!!!
-
Downbylaw that was funny, you remind me of every liberal I meet. YOu have no idea what is going on and just talk out your ass. Mass is about as liberal as you get, I don't understand why people including Bush don't understand that the Republican party stands for less Government. One more time LOL at Republicans in Teddy Kenndys state.

If they are doing this they are short sighted.
Online poker is what sustains B&M poker rooms. Most rec gamblers do not want to sit in a casino for 20hr's evry weekend playing poker. they want to mow thier lawn, play catch with thier kids or go out and get fcuked up. Sure, every once and a while they want to play live, so they make the trip once a week/month/year and play some cards.
If these people are forced not to play online, they will forget about poker within a few months. it is .25/.5NL for two hours after the kiddies go to bed, that keeps them in the game - it is managable, respectful and fun. Playing live is slow, inconvienent and has very negative connatations. trust me no one feels good telling thier co wokers they spent 36 of the last 58 hours in a casino.
if people dont come to the card room, how can they drop $50 on wheel of Fortune on thier way out. Legalizing online gambling keeps the poker room stocked and it increases revenue. It amazes me that the gambling lobby does not see this -
Patrik obv. is a donk, and A) never played poker, B) played poker and lost and is jealous.
At least the other dude was smart and slipped it in a port security act and not a friggin Pro-gambling bill.
I call all day -
Wow. Work to do guy's.
