I am an orthodox Jew and therefore I can't play poker on the Sabbath, which according to Jewish law runs approximately from Friday Sundown to 25 hours from then.
I'm thinking about playing the main event and sitting out for the last part of day 2, namely from about 725pm onwards.
Note that Day 2 starts at noon and the structure of the Main event is: 30k start stack, 120 min levels, 20 min break, 90min dinner break after 2nd level of day.
Assuming all goes as scheduled, Day 2 schedule looks like:
12-2- level 5 (2-400 50a)
2-220-break
220-420- level 6 (250-500 50a)
420-550- dinner
550- 750- level 7 (3-600 75a)
level 8 is 4-800 w/ 100a
So I could get through the majority of level 7 (maybe half of it if things do go as scheduled). How many chips do you think I will lose over the course of the 1-1.5 levels I sit out. How do you think it will impact my (a person's) roi? -
what are you going to do if you make the final 27 or however many that are left on the following friday/saturday if you were to make it there?

Isn't gambling against the code of being an Orthodox Jew? You have no chance to do well if you sit out 2 days in this tournament.

2) read OP again. he's sitting out 1.5 levels on day 2
and Ari, its so hard to quantify how much value u lose by sitting out (obviously cause we are missing the variable of your stack). But whatever it is, I can assure you, and I'm sure you already know this, missing a level or so is nowhere near enough of reason to skip such a well structured event. -
80K ummm wait for the maven i ll do chop chop minus 35K theres your 70K BMV CHOP CHOP IMHO

No such thing as religion in poker.

He would be missing more than one day if he goes super deep.. Friday July 16th they play down to 27th and Saturday July 17th they play down to 9.. Ari, would you be willing to play on the night of the 16th and the day of the 17th if you made it that far? If not, you probably shouldn't play.. If you would play the following week if you were potentially ready for some serious $$$, then I don't see a major issue with you skipping 1 1/2 blind levels early on..

17k chips is my guess. so about 21 blinds, (level 8 wise). Id say if you dont have 50-60k chips by the time you leave then you might find yourself in an ugly spot when you come back the next day. Id prob start playing level 6 like i had 20k left maybe taking a few chances with some maybe loose 3 or 4 bets. Obv you know your ev is going to go down but i cant imagine a solid player would become -ev by missing half of level 6 and all of level 7. Just make sure you dont have some funky stack of 30-40k when you have to stop

they also got pissed that Jesus would heal people on the Sabbath... poker on sunday ftw

1. To the guy who said there's no such thing as religion in poker, there are some people, like me who are going to use their winnings almost exclusively for Christian purposes.
2. I say go for it OP. You only get so many WSOP MEs in ur life. -
While I would not make fun of someones religion I really dont get this. I mean if you play poker for a living, u just have to play in these spots sometimes imo.

30ish hands per hour = 60ish hands per level. Just at level 8 you would lose 6k in antes and 7200 in blinds. So you are probably losing like 15kish total which not only is 1/2 of your starting stack but at this point in the tourney will be equal to about 20 BBs. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

I thought you're not suppose to work on the sabbath, obv I know nothing about your religion. Cant see how playing poke is against the rules.

if you are only missing 1 level or maybe 1 and a half...i think you should go for it.

If you were Catholic you could just get a note from your priest.

Pray that they change the days that the events are played..god works in mysterious ways

Obviously the last 2 pre Nov days are Friday and Sat again, so that another issue. At the same time I can't imagine skipping the ME and I can't imagine playing through Saturday in it. I figure that the vast majority of the time I won't have to worry about the last days, but Foucalt on 2+2 brings up a good point about how all the equity in tournaments is decided at the end, and if I can't play that surely it's neg -ev. I'm interested in how -EV it is. Also, while logically it should be the same sitting out day 2 vs sitting out day 6, the latter will be much harder for me.

Dont worry. Jesus will forgive you.

is that a level i can smell...?

Ari - first off I'm a little confused. You'd miss 1.5 levels on friday evening. wouldn't you also miss levels on Day 3? (or maybe there are multiple day 2's and it's a non-problem.....)
I think foucault is right though. It's one thing to miss 1.5 levels day 2. It's another to miss what would likely be a greater number of levels between day 6 and day 7 when you'd miss all of friday night and a number of hours on saturday (varying of course by when it restarts.) It's especially worse since you are good enough to really play at those latter stages- you aren't the dead money.
Seems to me that if you got to day 6 and think you'd give in and play... you might as well bite the bullet and just play day 2.
I'd suggest you discuss this with your rabbi. (And I speak as a fellow member of the tribe though non-observant.) Perhaps he can help you figure this out. Also, correct me if I am wrong, but don't orthodox rabbi's grant special dispensations for people to do varying things? (For instance i've heard of people getting the blessing of their orthodox rabbi to get a tattoo, which is normally prohibited by the letter of the law right? --- I believe creative interpretations of talmud etc. found people outs.)
Either way, I'd think you'd feel better about it all if you discussed the issue and it's possibilities with the rabbi sooner than later.. or else you might be lucky enough to have the day 6-7 dilemma rearing it's ugly head and no time to really think through it. Not to mention if you played day 6 while feeling guilty about it - I highly doubt you'd be playing anywhere near your best. -
Saturday, Donny, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't drive a car, I don't fucking ride in a car, I don't handle money, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as shit don't fucking roll!
