Is this the new in thing now? What's the purpose of it? A few years ago no one did and now its almost like you raise too much if you don't. If you like min raising play limit poker.
-
I watched a deepstacked tournie (HS) recently and the trainer used this throughout. He talked about keeping pots small to reduce reverse implied odds and alse being able to keep lesser hands in more cheaply than had you 3bb'd with your sizing.
I understand the logic but found it hard to implement myself. -
stacks tend to get awkward deep in tourneys so it makes it difficult to configure a strat 3xing all the time , minraising early is just retarded imo.
-
So at what point in tournues do u implement usage.
-
That's wt I was thinking
-
Min raising imo differs depending on how deep ,table image, stack size etc..
I used it quite effectively when i came 3rd in a 33k guarantee on Full Tilt .
it allowed me to guage hand strengths based on 3 bets and i almost always only min raised from early pos which allowed me to fold even quite strong hands which would play difficult post flop OOP.
i would never consider min raising from late pos. -

Personally, I very rarely min raise unless it is for a reason. In my opinion a min raise is begging to be called if not raised. So not always, but occassionally when I am on a loose table I will min raise with any pair higher than tens and the occassional AK, AQ or Ax suited, deliberately hoping for a re-raise. I feel comfortable playing after the flop. Chip stack and tourney pos play a big part in the decision making process as well.
The trick with this strategy is knowing when it's time to fold, especially if you have been raised and you called, then cBet out of pos and get called and your only holding Ax and missed the board. Flop texture plays alot when considering your next move.
Just my opinion.
But yes, I agree, I have seen alot more use of min raising in the last couple of years.
The main reason I very sparingly min raise early (NLHE) is too many players can enter a pot quite cheaply by simply calling. This is when pp of any rank becomes vaunerable to a bad beat.
Interesting post. -

Pre antes you are betting to build a pot and play post-flop, therefore betting around 3 BB, but post-antes most of the time you should be betting to steal what is already in the pot pre-flop - because there are more chips in the pot to win - thanks to antes - so by min raising or 2.5x BB, you will be betting 2BB to win 1BB + 1 SB + antes = 2:3, therefore risking less to win more.
Also the later in the tourney, the larger the BB is in comparison to your stack, so you don't want to have to be raising 3BB, which could be 15% of your stack, just to steal. -
VS a well rounded player min-raising can and will be punished. If you are very good player then by all means min raise. it can get some players to over play weaker hands pre or flat giving you a flop if your hand is mediocre pre. its really not that bad of a strategy. see more flops play more poker by min raising imo

min raising or slightly more definitely has a place. but over the last few years, its become more and more standard at all levels of a tournament, which I feel goes against the idea of a tournament, which is putting pressure on opponents and hopefully getting all the chips. its difficult to get all the chips if youre always playing small pots against multiple opponents out of position, which is what often happens when you min raise from anywhere but late position. then if by some miracle you do flop a big hand, suddenly theres no money in the pot to win. obviously as all the stack sizes begin to decrease including your own, there is a place for smaller raises, but if you have a big stack, I think its better to put pressure on your opponents pre flop by raising larger, giving yourself better odds against guys who may 3 bet shove 13bbs on you. with min raising, its a lot tougher to get good odds to call shoves, not to mention it affords guys enough room to come over the top with dog shit, forcing you to fold much of your range. i like to force my opponents to play honest against me, and i feel when im raising larger, i define my hand more forcing them to really decide whether or not they want to get involved with me. stealing the blinds seems like a lost art now, and people undervalue the concept of just taking down pots pre flop. it's just my opinion and im sure many will disagree, but i think as the game has evolved, doing something different from what has become the norm will likely help your game and keep opponents off guard

You might be surprised how many pots you scoop by min-raising. It's a great move once the blinds get high.

min raising and close to min raising (2.2bbs) is good and effective when your opponents are rarely flatting (folding or 3betting) as you get the same information and give yourself relatively deeper stacks to play with.
if your opponents are frequently flatting and folding to cbets then you should go bigger to get more value from them.
(this isn't all inclusive advice, it depends on other factors as well but this is a good base to keep in mind) -
Min raising allows you to play a lot more hands. I usually do it when the antes kick in. Pre antes I'm 2.3xing. I would say more, but why give out free info. If you don't understand min raising, you are more than likely a beginner. Instead of chastising it, try understand why it works. When I first starting playing, I had the same view as the person who started this thread. However, 27,000 MTTs later, I now understand it's purpose.

Informative thread, I think theres an element of following the trends, not wishing to be seen as a out of line donk!
Suppose its more useful in the higher stakes games, where there is more 3 &4 betting.
The down side, is inviting in more callers, when you dont really want any! -
it really depends on the site you play on as well. I play on titan where 3xing is common, as well as guys flatting and folding to c-bets. I want my opponents to make big mistakes, not little ones. some guys like to min raise every hand, because its the only way you can keep your stack moving in the right direction if you only win small pots. where others rather play less pots, but have them be worth something. people talk about guys min raising being better players post flop, and to an extent its true, but I feel it also leads a player to become overly cautious, at least thats how I ended up feeling after a year of min raising a lot. min raising can also be a sign of not wanting to go broke. to each his own, just don't do one thing or the other because the flavor of the week on your training site is doing it. do what youre most comfortable with, or what works best with the style of play or image you want to project

Its an interesting trend to watch as people have gone from 3-4X to 2.6X down now 2.2 -2.0X. What it does do is allow you to steal more pots, but I find it also allows good players, who are willing to not follow the trends, to increase their preflop calls and unorthodox post flop play. I imagine in a few months calling a min raise and stealing the cbet by leading out will be the new 3 bet.
-
one of my buttons is set at 2.2x, i enjoy the post flop play, but interestingly when i do use this value more people fold, i get more callers when i 3x or 3.5x
i enjoy playing the hand at the pot size i choose, so i do tend to raise smaller -
def,lol especially these lil cash cow mtt's ive been playn ive been min+ a nickel raising
-
I actually find 3xing deep in a tourney as a leak....I'm sure most would agree.
-
Minraising is obv the trend nowadays and for many good reasons, but you have to play the table you're at
minraising early is usually stupid but definatley has some merits
In my experience, 2,5x smaller buyin tourneys is better... you filter out more the players who will still flat you out of the SB with 12bb's and weird holdings... 3xing pre in these mtt's is something I've never tried though but once in a while you see a crazy active player in say... the 3$r on stars playing 45/40 and 3xing everything putting huge pressure on other players who dont really know how to adjust, just my 2cents
