  1. Tonight I have been in a zone, playing really good poker (I believe), yet I've lost about 50 bucks for the evening, cashing in only one tournament out of 3. In all 3 tournies (without turning this into a Bad Beat post, I hate those), I lost with a pretty strong hand that was beat by the inevitable very poor hand by my opponent that hit. (By poor I mean like really poor, not like 87 suited poor, lol. One example is my AQ losing on a board of Q76 to a guy who played Q6, my preflop raise being 4xbb.) I'm sure this question has been asked thousands of times by thousands of players who have had this happen to them thousands of times, but does anyone have any advice on how to cut down on these awful beats by these awful online hands? One strategy I've been using to some effect has been small-ball poker, trying to stick to small pots so that I don't end up losing all my chips when a bad flop like the one above occurs. This doesn't seem to be how a lot of the top players on this site play though, so I know there must be a better method that I'm just not aware of yet. Anyone have any advice for me? I've accepted that these beats will happen to me numerous times every day, but was just wondering if there was a way to minimize the blow.

  2. Well, this is a good topic for discussion. Yes, try to stick to winning a lot of small-pots. Depending on the buy in amount you play, you can take a position of playing extremely tight for the first hour, hour and a half to let the tards get knocked out. In that time just get it in preflop with AA or KK or post flop with the nuts pretty much. From there as it gets deeper you may need to open it up, but play your tight game. I'm definitely not a top online pro, but have been around MTT's for a few years now, and I've learned and it looks as if the top MTT players obviously play tons of the biggest guranteeds everyday-they know they are gonna get donked and thus they are playing maybe 5, 10, 20 plus MTT's a day and their skill is going to come through most likely in a few with a few cashes and maybe a FT score/win. So, my opinion is to play a lot of small pots, especially early, and nit it and get it in with the nuts pretty much to try to avoid the beats on stars b/c they can be bad there. Bankroll is very key in this. You have to be able to withstand a cashless streak and know it will turn around and you will cash over time if you are a solid player. Hope my 2 cents helped. Gl to you.
  3. My brother it gets alot worse man. Nothing you can do.. And three tourneys is nothing. Look longterm. Your going to have days when your not going to cash. Just look longterm and hopefully youll be winning.

And you dont want to play small pots when you have big hands. You want to maximize your winnings.
  4. Oh, I've definitely had this happen more than 3 times, for SURE, lol. I guess I'm going to get some conflicting ideas on how to deal with these beats, since I already have a rec for small-ball and a rec for pushing big. From what I've learned watching players like Mizzi and Saul is that they don't really seem to play tight at all, lol. They're pushing and pushing all the time, and while they might be a little luckier than I've been up to this point, they're certainly doing something different than everyone else, or are they just doing the same things only doing them better?

  5. If you just focus on getting all your money in with the worst hand then you can never get bad beat.

also, how is it a bad beat when AQ<Q6 after getting all in on Q76?
