I was in a 1-3 NL live game today and I'm pretty sure I played this horrendous but just want to make sure that my thinking of how I should have played the hand is correct.
I'm in UTG+3 with AQ(os). Folded to me, I raise to $16.
Button calls
SB re-raises to $36.
I call (mistake)
Button calls
Flop: 3,7,8 rainbow
SB leads out with $100 and will put me all-in (I have about $60 behind)
I tank and fold
Button calls and is all-in
Turn: Q
River: T
Button has K high
SB has JJ and wins with pair of jacks.
Regardless of result (yes I would have won had I stayed in), but my mistake was flat calling the preflop raise by the SB I believe. I'm pretty sure I should have 4-bet all-in pre, but he had been raising and playing quality hands (pretty TAG overall) so my first thought was QQ+.
Since I'm shortstacked at the table, my only play is to shove pre right? -
Other than not reraising, you played it right. No need going broke on a draw.

The correct move is to fold pre flop at the very worst he is going to have AK

Hi shawnden from stars...So I am not a cash player predominately...but I have a relatively decent knowledge and I am definitely not a losing player. AQ is trouble... It's a hand that will lose you money...unless you start with the table min and have been seeing the guy raising alot... Cash games are very person specific...If he was TAG and you were not risking a large section of your total income... then I would consider pushing or folding... I'd rate the decisions as follows:
2.5 points for fold pre-flop (decided by TAG style)
1.0 points for push
.5 for call
My reasoning... You are shortstacked... he is minraising (meaning that if he is indeed TAG he is showing the appearance of encouraging action while making a jucier pot for a caller). I am not a spectacular cash game player...but I know the game...the minraise shows red flags if the person is no maniac...Bail. But push is not horrible, but assuming a non-minraise bluff...you gotta figure you are behind. -
fold preflop unless the reraiser is a total lag tard then you just jam and hope for the best

im not gonna tell you that i know everything about poker because noone does. As soon as this pot was raised to 36$ preflop u have to know right then and there that you most likely are going to be all in. I would have wighed my decision so that if i wanted to play this pot id push all in right there. I think this would have been the best play. My reasoning is if u just call and try to see a flop you will fold to any bet if you dont hit, this isnt profitable. way too much money to call.

PF is a raise or fold spot. And this is villain dependent for me. Folding on the flop was the right move despite the results of the hand.

Facing only the reraise from the BB, you're in trouble, given his profile, and you're in a still worse spot with the button flat-calling, though a lot of players will turn up with hands such as the small-middle pairs or ace-rag suited.
Pre-flop, I'm folding this, and you made the correct play of throwing your hand away on the flop. It's true that you'd have hit and won a nice pot the way things actually went, but in the long run, chasing in NL is a fool's errand and will do your bankroll no favours. -
Something to think about. What's the buttons stack size? If it gets to you and you shove for your remaining 80 the raiser is going to be in a tough spot. Not only will he have to call off another 80 OOP against the button, but that raise opens the button up to shove if the raise just calls the 80. Without AA,KK he's never going to feel comfortable in this spot and your raise looks super strong, possibly AK, AA,KK yourself. Obviously this is a squeeze play, but depending on the buttons stack size there's a good chance in this situation you'll pick up the pot because the button just flatted preflop and then he saw you raise and then re-raise into two players.
