As some of you know I'm a sports reporter for a paper here on Cape Cod and have a blog. Usually I write about stuff like the Red Sox and Celtics, and other random sports observations. I used my soap box to further try to educate my readership a little bit about online poker.
Don't know how good it came out, but sometimes I get inspired to write at weird hours, and it's nearly 2 AM here. Hope you enjoy it.

Nice read Rich........I was just thinking the other day, that all you said is true. Lotteries and such and live poker being allowed everywhere almost....could it be possible since the Casinos have a ton of money wrapped up in the stock market and the Govenment is getting their share and the Casino's do have power....is it possible that they are doing an end around on us because we the 'online poker community' are taken massive money away from these casino's? just a thought and might deserve a repost in its own thread? dewrag

I visited my brother in boston and was surprised at how much they advertise for the lottery over there. I understand the need for $ but they really play to peoples weaknesses by attaching the little scrach offs to the local sports franchises and such.

Great read.
There are two problems with comparing state (or multi-state) lotteries to on-line poker.
1. State lotteries directly benefit the state. How do the states get "their share" of the rake from poker sites.
2. Online poker takes away from the disposable dollars that will be used by individuals in their state. Those disposable dollars that not only go to gambling, but also to more recreational activities. Personally - poker has become my downtime acitivity of choice. I used to do stuff like go out bowling (and drink heavily taxed alcohol) - but the state hasn't got those dollars in a few years.
If I'm not mistaken, this was one of the primary reasons that Kentucky stopped online gaming - they felt it was hurting their horse racing revenues.
This will be one of the hurdles that the online poker industry faces - how do we get the government (state and federal) a fair share of the "rake". -
very nice

thanks for the positive feedback guys, I really appreciate it. You guys have made it the most viewed page on the newspaper's site this week ... by about double. Thank you, and let's keep fighting the good fight and get this stuff straightened out so that we don't have to play online poker and hope that someone comes through the doors at us like Ellian Gonzalez.
