  1. Was stu ungar the best NL tourney player of all time? Pls no nonsense about the drugs, or lifestyle, just poka. I asked Negreanu and he said stuey was not a nice person/ I laughed and said as a player how did he ply/ not his character , he said he never played with him and that was that. I asked Ivey and said both ungar and hellmuth were both better tourney players. I asked huck and he told me about when they played Heads up and he said he was Crazy good. Asked barry and he said he never played with him. Asked caro and he said he had the most talent he had ever seen, but wished that he had played in the early tournies with him, asked tood B he said the guy was phenominal. So what do u guys think? Was he really that good? Was he just doing the things that the top Nl tourney players do today? Has anyone on this forum ever played with him? tks.
  2. he just ran very well
  3. Not sure why you are asking us if you've already asked all these lives pros who actually played with Stu.

He was obviously ahead of his time.

  4. well i just got off the phone with ivey as well and he said ungar was pretty over rated, so i called doyle brunson quick and he said he was very good, so then i called eric lindgren and asked him and he said he was pretty good as well, so i guess i just dont know what to think.....

    Lol.

I once heard someone say that he played back then the way we do know.
I think that says it all. But I believe it is commonly held that he was the best gin player of all time and it wasn't even close.

Regardless, incredible player, legendary life story. If only that dude from the Sopranos hadn't played him in that film about his life, ruined it imo.
  6. i have no idea and this is a shot in the dark but id be willing to bet that back in the day when everyone was so nitty he probably was very LAGGY and crushed the nits all day

  7. spoke a few years ago to 2 guys who played with him for a year or two on a reg basis and it seems that his ability to read people was unmatched and he intimidated almost everyone who sat down with him much like ivey does today (but i'm assuming far better)

the combination of crazy soul reads and "rain man" like math skills made him crazy good

stories of him making calls with jack and queen high in high stakes games are all over the place

that said, the guy sucked at life even more than he owned poker so who cares

all 2nd hand info, so take it for what its worth
  8. Was everyone really nitty? Im looking at one of stu's tables from back in the day, dolly, slim, kaplan, moss, baldwin, not nitty at all my man.
