Hello all,
I have been playing for about 3 years and got introduced by my lil bro, grayfoxx22 and have been overall a losing player.
I got the ABC aspect down and have been really studying my game in the last 3 months or so. Ive got a good grasp of
pot odds, implied odds, fold equity and hand ranging but to be honest although Ive educated myself on the topics applying them
is another story. I have had a pretty good month in Feb putting some good cashes on the board and of recent have found
my self stacking up early making some good plays early on in MTT's and getting deep. Here is where my dilema begins.
I found 9 out of 10 times i get a monster stack deep I cant seem to maintain momentum. If I loosen up my play and look to
play some flops and attack the mid stacks I get chopped more often than not. If I fold my way up i can cash but no shot at winning.
My question is what are some of the ways to improve on and learn where I am making the biggest mistakes in my deep tourney
strategy? -
You are skilled enough with ABC poker to chip up early from all the gamblers and weaker players at the beginning of the tournament. But in the late stages it gets a bit wilder and you are not aggressive enough preflop and everyone else is running you over.
OP I think you should open up your game, and use the chips you have to raise and re-raise pre-flop to build/maintain your stack. You mentioned you attack the medium stacks. Sounds like you might be picking some wrong spots - and also, I think you need to attack anyone who is being conservative, even big stacks. On the same note, some medium stacks are best avoided, depending on the player. You need to play aggressively pre and post-flop, but need to know when to fire and when to just shut-down. I mean don't attack a player just for the sake of attacking - reads/ history/ ranges/ position/ betting patterns/ community cards all should help you decide if a move will work or not. Basically get in and make things happen don't wait for big hands they are too rare. -
Thank you for the advice. I think you make a valid point which is the difference between playing aggressively to be aggressive and to be playing aggressive according to reads etc. Some trouble I ran into last night...I have a TAG on my right playing good with about 25BB I have 60BB as the chip leader with 56 players left. I have been raising in position with some good hands and re-raising with some
monsters and overall have a strong tight aggro image. I opened my game up a little and raised two hands consecutive, 7s8s fold to me, and Jh10h fold to me then comes the hand. the TAG on my right raise 3.5x BB standard and I have AsKd (blinds 800-400 50 ante). I re-raise to 6000 he shoves JJ. I call flops runs 10dQs7h 4c 10h he chops me. Would it have been smarter to fold or to flat? -

like what was already said once you have that stack you have to start making the chips work for you. When people know that you can call them without worry their going to be a lot conscience of what they think you're going to do before they come out firing with 22 and K9 off. You have to attack a lot of pots but be careful not to back yourself into a corner. Good players will try and take advantage of your aggression and try and trap you in pots to double up when they have the nuts. So raise and 3-bet a lot but don't be afraid to muck your hand when someone wants to flip, it only takes a couple of bad flips to loose your stack that you worked so hard for. Basically raise and 3-bet more then you normally would and fold to 3 and 4-bets when you don't have the goods, build your stack up one set of blinds and antis at a time rather then calling off small stack shoves light. Just remember its a hell of a lot different raising light then it is calling light.

Thank you great advice

i find myself making bad decisions when i make them quickly....
take your time, think, and then take action -
Just imagine, when facing a difficult decision, that you have posted the scenario to this message board, and that good players have replied, and then do what you imagine they would have said.
