hey guys, im looking for some advice, now, online im not much on an MTT`er but im a regular in my local casino and im looking at how to take all my bubbles and quick final table exits into 1sts/2nds and thirds.
looking back at my play and reviewing tournies i play in, i pretty much always amass a large number of chips and make my way along to the final table but i always seems to enter the final table, or the bubble with a shortstack, so i obv spew chips in the middle.
im looking for help on a few things.
1. when in the middle of a tournament, how do i keep a medium sized stack from getting blinded down when i get bad cards and am unable to play a hand for a while..?
2. when approaching the final table whats the best strategy to use to avoid spewing chips but gaining a good stack.
3. and when at the final table whats the best way to play?
thanks -
Build chips up with 2 tables left or go broke!!!!!
-
When all else fails or whatever you are doing is not working, go back to basics. TAG it up, use good fundamentals and play good solid image controlled poker. Once you get the hang of that, then expand.
-
if you ever watch the videos on the training sites you will notice that there aggression with a stack is incredible. also if this is like most casinos daily tourneys, the structures are just horribly fast, in that case just stay aggro and run goot.
-
thanks, when i build a big stack i try to be aggressive but i end up losing alot of chips that way, i tend to get tighter and tighter
-
I think the blinds levels play a big role in this. The casinos I play usuall have 20 min structures but the vegas/atc casinos have some super stack tournies with 45 min sturctuures and larger buy ins. I play position. I havent played many live tournies but every live tourney I have played live or home game regardless of buy in I have won it if I make it past 2nd break.

dont ask me, i cant close a screen door.
-
If you're only 3/4/5-betting w/ your premiums it's going to be pretty easy to exploit
-
last night for example, was playing a tournament, 3 hands before the first break i had 34,000 chips ( blinds 400/800 avg stack about 19k) and i get dealt QQ. i raise to 3100 and get 2 callers. flop comes down A K X. guy bets out 2500 and i fold.
first hand after the break, i limp in with K7clubs. flop comes K Q 7. i check, guy bets out about 3000 and i raise to 7. guy goes all in for about 15 and i call, he turns over KQ.
its hands like those that just chop me all the way down to a short stack when im cruising along. always seems to happen and i cant seem to stop it.
any pointers? -
Stop limping mediocre hands.
-
1) Good fold.

2) Bad Beats <--------that way
Shove lighter/get more aggressive deep. -
1. Stop Limping
2a. Tighten up so you are less likely to fold to a shove or 3/4/5 bet.
2b. Loosen up when the table is too tight
3. Run better -
thanks for the pointers. i do try to tighten up in various places. sometimes i just get plain unlucky but i do need to plug this leak. i was in a fantastic positon last week but couldnt keep hold of the chips.
the hand with the queens. i did try to be aggressive raisin high but still got 2 callers. and obv when the AKX came down i had no option but to fold. K7 was just unlucky but another day same hand i might have gained alot from that. also possibly if i hit the flushes.
ill keep trying. got another tourny tonight so ill see how it goes then. -
1. open
2. if you think you open enough open a bit more
3. if you think your opening too much still open some more
learn to understand stacksizes and figure out what things you can do w a certain stack and what you cant do, also pay attention to the stack sizes at the table -

1. study ICM, it will help when your short handed at the FT
2. Play MTT SNG's - FTP 90's and stars 4.40 180's, i think that's a good combination of maintaining your stack\building a stack
3. play HU Sng's - play deep slow ones and short fast ones, get a feel for being HU you make a ton of $ if your sick HU
4. Play PLO Cash - no better game for reading boards\controlling pots
5. learn implied odds. -
thanks, ive always been meaning to grind the 4.40s on stars, just never got round to it yet.

Regarding stack sizes, the Bond18 vids on PokerSavvyPlus are quite good. He's a great teacher and one of the more articulate mtt pros.

look for good steal spots , and if ur a reshove stack , look for good resteal shove spots and keep ur stack healthy if u bust tryin to put urself in position to win a tourny i wouldnt be mad at that , if u keep lettin urself get blinded off to bubble or get 9th doesnt seem any better to me then if u bust 15th tryin to win the thing , gl
