I am going to be completely forth coming and honest in the following thread. I believe there are many players out there like me. I have a dream of becoming a professional poker player. I have been knocked down over and over again however I have never been one to say die. Recently I put forth the hardest effort ever before as i was trying to grind and beat the online poker cash games. I have read every book imaginable, downloaded every poker tracking system imaginable, and even sourced poker coaches. I analyze my play on a regular basis. Take player notes. Table select for fish, and play a solid tight aggressive style. I play in position and i make big lay downs when I feel i have too. Unfortunately I still cannot beat the cash games as low as 2 cent 5 cent micros. At this point I have tried everything possible and I am feeling more deflated then I have ever felt on this long and painful poker grind/fail. I am beginning to think it is now impossible to make it pro in this game now that everybody knows hows to play. I am sure others have wondered this as well and I cannot be the only player in this boat. I know some of you already established pros out there may not want to reply or help players like me which is understandable. I envy your ability to consistently beat the game. I also wonder if micros are harder to beat then some of the higher limits. I feel micro players are players who play straight up. Rarely bluff, and rarely fold to bluffs. I feel like money is just exchanged back and forth between the tightest players. I am loaded with self doubt. At the higher limits I feel more casual players will take shots at trying to turn 100 into 1000 in one session. This is something I feel the micros don't see often. If I could please get somebody's input on this it would be greatly appreciated. This will be one of my last threads and well consider it as well as a cry for help. I have one last good shot in me before i decide to call it quits forever with the game. Thanks in Advance!

Maybe you need to find the right game for you.. If you feel you cant beat cash games, maybe you need to switch to SNGS, or MTTS, HU Cash or SNGS.. If you cant find a game that you can beat, and you are studying/evaluating your plays, then maybe poker isnt the game for you..
-
what kind of bankroll would you say you need to play 25 cent 50 heads up? i noticed that is the smallest limit offered besides the SNGS

What is your opening range in the cutoff in a cash game?

Interested to see this re your aggression. -
910 suited+
77+ -
Try live it is much easier to me but i do pretty well on bovada though
-
Iv thought about live being a much easier game but a much harder lifestyle especially if you live far from the casino. I find you get paid far easier live as opposed to online it seems like opponents are never giving anything back.

i initially opened 22-66 in CO however i find im giving up a lot with those hands at the micros because more players float with air then at the higher stakes. I feel like im saving money in the long run by cutting out some of the lower pairs.....what do you think? bad idea?
-
i cant imagine micro stakes cash games ever being unbeatable but if it really is the case play something else
mtts especially at micro level are full of idiots -
Iv obviously got some huge leaks....but i mean....i feel like i should be able to chip up without waiting for AA KK QQ AK every hand.....i feel like i should be able to chip up with skill......but at micros it seems like you cant outsmart an idiot. For me to wait for AA KK AK and all those premium hands im not really learning anything and i find it doesnt require very much skill as much as patience.......i feel as though i wont get better by doing this. At micros maybe by the end of 6 months i could start playing 10 cent 25 cent. How quickly do you think you could grow your bankroll in the micros?
-
I would get leak buster to beat the micros cash.
+ get in good physical (including your diet) and mental health. If your gf/ wife is yelling at you in the background your brain will suck. If you are stressed about your job your brain will suck. However if you are running / healthy you will feel good about yourself and your win rate will follow. And believe in yourself, almost anyone with the right attitude and work ethic can learn to beat low stakes holdem should they stick with it.
I def wouldn't try and play heads up. You are playing way too tight for that + the best players tend to be hu. low mtts will be easiest to beat but regardless you need to learn to win @ the cash games to go pro so what better time then now. also if you are playing 6 max maybe switch to full ring for a bit.

Personally I think you should re-analyse your ranges. Experiment one week opening with all pairs and suited connectors from late position, and generally playing looser, then the next week experiment with a tighter opening range. Also work on post-flop play IMO, because that may be where you are losing value and getting bluffed at.
I would also strongly recommend building up your bankroll outside of poker, just spend some time working doing other stuff, hobbies etc. Once you have established a little larger bankroll, but all money you can afford to lose, I would recommend turning you attention to the SNGs, maybe the 1$ buy-ins etc. That's where I think you can use your cash game knowledge well to get some value. -
Edited By: rayspizza Jun 27th, 2012 at 03:38 PMFirst patience is major part of the skill. If you can't figure out how to beat people who can not play; then you have no chance at beating people with solid fundamentals and creative use hand selection and bet sizing. As you move up you will encounter all types of play, @ 1/2 you will see plenty of people that play just as bad as 0.02/0.05, you will need to know how to beat them. That said if you have few hundred to play with and a job, then there is no need to start @ 0.02/0.05, jump to 0.1/0.25, at the very least you will cut out the tediousness of grinding up from 0.02/0.05.Originally Posted by Loduca99

In general tighten up, value bet more, forget about fancy play and post hands for comments.
Or OBV move up where they will respect your raises, that works every time -
pokerstars.....i multitable so i find stars is the best site for that....everyones a pokerstar though....thats the problem lol
-
thanks for the advice.....i will try this for sure
-
i strongly agree with what you say here....something i have been working on very hard. However I have had success playing heads up because I am believe it or not pretty decent at it. It is also what i enjoy most. The reason I come across so tight is because i multitable in the 6 max games and i find playing tight while multitabling limits a lot of my leaks in marginal spots especially. Maybe i should stop multi tabling. The problem is the type of bankroll i would need for heads up play would be around 1200......if i were to play heads up on stars at 25 cent 50 cent

If youre having trouble beating micro stakes then as mentioned before you should mix up your game for a week or 2. Do things you normally wouldnt do and see how it turns out. If that doesnt work id say try other games. Omaha and Omaha8 are fun and have a lot of horrible players in the lower stakes. If that doesnt work maybe poker just isnt for you. Its just like any other sport, some people will never be good at it.
-
I used to think the same way as you be honest.I thought that micro level Sng's are unbeatable, but since i got some training & started to work more on fundamentals slowly, but my game s improving & i already beat the micros.Variance is insane though.

i cried and begged to get better also. then one day after the truth settled in i realized im not that good. then i set out to be the best and i realized i had to be honest with myself. man that was hard. i wish i could play the micro's on stars!!!!!!!!
-
i mean i started 3 months ago with 20 bucks......at 1 cent 2 cent....grinded it up to 300........and then i lost 5 days straight after 3 months of me getting there i was back at 50 bucks......how can one deal with this.......i have very little tilt...i just ran extremely bad but i feel like that always happens longer then i run good? Damn its tough....
-
Idk exactly whats going on but there has to be something very wrong if you lost 125 buy ins in 5 days at .01/.02. Im not even sure you can do that by open shoving every hand for 5 days.
-
when i hit 150 i moved up to 2 cent 5 cent

You posted something earlier about not liking the micros because you arent learning anything. If you cant beat them then you still have much to learn. Even if you are beating them and building a roll you are learning solid habits that will make the bigger stakes much easier.
I would take a break and re-evaluate everything. Find good players to discuss hands with that you are uncertain about. Try and plug as many leaks as possible and then get back on it. Straightforward ABC poker is not hard to learn and thats all you really need to know in the micros. -
well let me ask you.....how do you play your pairs 88-JJ when face a raise in position and in the blinds?
-
There is no one correct answer I can give you on that one. Every situation is different and it really depends on your opponent, stack sizes and table dynamics. There are a lot of variables in play at all times and there is no "always" or "never"
-
thats probably my biggest problem then....im playing too systematic and probably playing too many tables....can i ask you to be a little more specific by what you mean when you say dynamics?
-
In the micros its completely fine to play straightforward poker. Dont try and outplay players youll just end up leveling yourself.
And I guess table dynamics arent that big of a deal in the micros because it wont make any other player adjust in any way so nevermind.
