Michael Kaplan, an Amateur Poker Player and Co-Author of the book "Aces and Kings," Wins the WSOP Academy Poker Tournament at Caesars Indiana, Outlasting a Field that Included Top Pros Greg Raymer, Scott Fischman and Alex Outhred.
ELIZABETH, Ind., April 11, 2007 - The World Series of Poker Academy ("WSOP Academy"), poker's premiere series of instructional camps where participants learn first-hand from the world’s greatest poker players, held its latest event at Caesars Indiana Hotel & Casino this past weekend and among the highlights included the Saturday night WSOP Academy Poker Tournament in which attendees were able to put into action what they learned during the day and compete for a seat to the 2007 World Series of Poker, including all expenses, hotel and airfare.
While the field of just under 100 players consisted of mostly amateur hopefuls attending the intensive two-day poker camp, the WSOP Academy's world class instructors and players, including 2004 World Champion Greg Raymer, two-time WSOP bracelet winner Scott Fischman and noted pro/instructor Alex Outhred, made the tournament a competitive outing for all the players. In the end though it was an amateur poker player and noted journalist, Michael Kaplan, who outlasted the field to take home the coveted seat to the 2007 WSOP Main Event, where he will compete for the ultimate prize in poker's richest tournament.
A New York native, Kaplan is co-author of the book "Aces and Kings:
Inside Stories and Million-Dollar Strategies from Poker's Greatest Players" and a frequent contributing writer to magazines such as Maxim, Cigar Aficionado, Details and Sports Illustrated. A longtime poker enthusiast, the New York native competed in last year's Main Event at the World Series of Poker, and in 2005 he won the WSOP's Celebrity/Media tournament held on the eve of the Main Event.
"I came in thinking that winning poker can't be taught, but I stand corrected. It was the lessons from the WSOP Academy that gave me the skills and confidence to take down the tournament," said Kaplan after his win.
The second and third place finishers at the WSOP Academy tournament received free entries into a future WSOP Academy event while the remaining players at the final table received either Oakley Thumps or Oakley sunglasses. The players who knocked out Raymer, Fischman and Outhred also each received Oakley sunglasses.
Poker players interested in attending a future WSOP Academy event, where they can learn winning poker from the best and also win a seat to the 2007 World Series of Poker, have two distinct opportunities to do so in the coming months.
First, this June 8-9, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the WSOP Academy will host the first ever poker camp exclusively for women.
The two-day WSOP Academy Ladies Event will feature world-class instruction by WSOP bracelet winner Annie Duke, poker tells expert and former FBI agent Joe Navarro and distinguished poker instructor Alex Outhred. At the end of the camp session, a tournament will be held with the top ten finishers awarded seats to the $1,000 buy-in World Championship Ladies No-Limit Hold’Em tournament immediately following the event.
Then on July 3, 4 and 5, the WSOP Academy will hold its three-day "Main Event Primer Camp" at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas just ahead of the 2007 WSOP Main Event. The event will feature a number of top professional players and instructors including 10-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth Jr., 2005 World Champion Joe Hachem, two-time WSOP bracelet winner Mark Seif, Greg Raymer, Joe Navarro and Scott Fischman, among others. Attendees to this session will have the chance to play in two private, live No-Limit Hold’em Tournaments, with each tournament awarding an entry into the WSOP Main Event.
Details for all World Series of Poker Academy events is available at www.wsopacademy.com or by calling 1-800-989-WSOP (9767). -
Check out the WSOP Academy to see what they have to offer. They run live seminars at WSOP Circuit Events and have a major seminar planned that will preceed the WSOP Main Event. They have a great fleet of instructors as well.
