  1. I've heard from both online and live pro's that you can't win a tournament w/o winning your races.

How true is this statement? Are their ways to avoid races and win tournaments? Playing more flops, well timed 3-bets, 4-bets, steals through an entire MTT? Or is it just impossible to take down a tourney without winning some races? Should you avoid too many races? Or should you be looking for those spots to double up? Now I know the answer may change depending on stack sizes, point in the tournament, and your M, but hopefully you understand my question.

I only ask because I find myself wondering if I can avoid those situations because fact is, every time you are racing - you're going to lose 50% of the time.

  2. Win flips, win tourneys.

Even if it wasn't for your stack... if you lose a lot of races, you're done right? Just wondering if it's possible to avoid races period.

Not really... if you're avoiding flips altogether, you're folding a lot of good hands

I'm kind of a proponent of this logic...that you're only mathematically supposed to win 1 out of 2 flips so if you keep putting yourself in flips then you can't run in tourneys unless you happen to go on some ungodly like 5 in a row flip heater. So I used to try to stay out of them for big pots...but this just led to me min cashing....so I started taking them...and I still mincash a lot. So I haven't found either side of the "to play flips or not to play flips" any better for myself.
  11. It's theoretically possible to avoid flips. You quite often hear in live tourneys "this is the 1st time I've been all in for the whole tourney" and that might be after 3-4 days! It goes without saying that it's all about picking your spots. In my experience, I've never won a tourney without winning at least 1 or 2 flips.
  12. If you aren't taking flips you are playing way too tight. Unless you're getting run over by the deck I don't see any way you can win a tournament playing like this.

  13. Good info. Thanks for your help guys. Sounds like I shouldn't be avoiding them, but still picking my spots.
