I have been playing online poker for a little bit now usually in MTT's. I was wanting to know if anybody has any tips for making money online and building a good bankroll starting with $100? Would people recommend cash games, tournaments, sit n go's?
Has anybody started with $100 and built a decent bankroll to move on up the ranks? I am living in South Korea and most of the tournaments start at 3am or other times which are not suitable for me so I am thinking of moving onto cash games to try and build up a bankroll.
I am not ready for multi tabling yet however would you still recommend getting a HUD? Also are there any books/forum websites/pdf's that you would recommend? Any tips on trying to start to make a 2nd income from poker would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

awesome screen name
I grind sit and go's and build it up and then piss it all away playing mid stakes cash
bust, reload, repeat.
have the discipline to stay at stakes until you are fully rolled.
100 buy in rule for sng's.. so with 100$ starting roll you should be plying 1.50 sng's-.50 -
grind out the SnG's like smokerock said. Ive been playing live cash games most of my life and just started playing MTT's online too. There is a good book out called "Harrington on Hold'em." One of my friends let me read it and its been alot of help. Also just talk to your friends who play poker about different strategies. I wouldnt recommend building a bankroll starting w/ 100 dollars by plyaing cash games..unless your good at them and make a consistent profit.

I would start with cash games. You can make money from all three sitngos, mtts, and cash games, but i feel and most agree that the highest hourlys can be obtained in cash games. Also the skills you learn in cash games will translate to sngs and mtts which isnt necessary the case vice versa. I've been playing online for about five years now, two years seriously and I wish I wouldve dived into cash games sooner instead of starting with sitngos.
I highly recommend signing up for one of the many training sites out there (deucescraked.com, leggopoker, cardrunners, bluefire, etc there are a ton)
watching videos from highly successful players and hearing there thought process is so extremely valuable.
Best of luck in your poker journey! keep a positive mindset, put in the study time, stay focused during the inevitable downswings and good results will come. -
start with SNGS.
since you only have 100. I suggest you start with the 0.5 45 man turbo. just play a few and if you have a good understanding of poker. You will be use to it.
wait until you grind up to 150/200 ish. then move to 1.5 45 mans.
and keep grinding until you have a BR of 400 ish. then you should be good at those SNGS. and move up to 3.5 45man..etc..
once you have a bankroll of maybe 800 ish. you can start puting in some low stake mtts..
I think you can find more detail about bank roll builiding at 2+2 forum...
good luck.. -
imho ignore br management. if ur asking this question, ur probably a casual player, and if ur casual, u wont have patience to grind up 50 cent sngs. if u have 100$, just start with 2 or 3$sngs and grind up, if u bust, go study and reload.
-
All you need to do is win win win no matter what, keep money on your mind and never get enough.
-
Depends on your style, but I think SnGs are the way to go. They are a pretty good bankroll builder, and they help train you in the habits that youll need to be successful in other forms of poker. If your eventual goal is to become a MTT grinder, SnGs won't teach you every skill you'll need, but they will acquaint you with a framework for developing those skills and give you a taste of what it takes.
They also are available in a wide assortment of buy-in levels, so you can move up or down stakes as needed, and play where you are most comfortable. -
ya i agree BRM is irrelevant if you're losing player.

with 100 BR is deffo sng's,but be ready for some badbeats ;)I'm currently playing for fun with 50 $ BR so will see if i go bust ;) -
Some great advice thank you. I have read the Harrington on Hold em series (well 2 of them) to form a basis of strategy and have just ordered Winning Poker Tournaments books and am currently studying some of the Daily Variance short handed cash game PDF's and Easy Game 1+2 by BalugaWhale.
I think I am going to mix it up between cash games and sit n go's and see how it goes while studying and trying to improve my game. I will have a look at the training sites as well.
Cheers for the info and good luck. -
Start with whatever game you like to play. All options are perfectly fine for building a bankroll. You can still find MTTs at suitable times for you on most sites I am sure so dont be discouraged about missing the huge guarantee tournys. With a $100 BR playing MTTs (the only format I claim to have any expertise on) play no more than $3 freezeouts and $1 rebuys. Try to play smaller field tournys. If you are playing on Pstars and that is difficult play 180 man tournys. This way your variance will be reduced.
As far as whether or not you use a HUD. I dont think its necessary if all you are doing is playing one or two tables. But keep in mind that as you get better you should be able to become more comfortable playing more tables. This is important if you are looking to create a reasonable second income playing poker. Its really just not possible to play 1 or 2 tables and make enough money sustainably to consider it any decent form of income.
To me the best way to learn the game is by making contact with people like yourself that are starting out and studying with them. The next best way is by gaining experience.. and finally the final way is by reading books or by watching training videos etc. -
The most important thing you need to consider is bankroll management. Set reasonable goals and make every decision with conviction.

My biggest problem in becoming a consistently profitable cash game player at the local game is I know I don't have the bankroll to start. What should I have to start my bankroll with at a 1/2 hyperaggro loose game? I personally feel if I go to this particular game with 500 on any night I can be profitable nearly all the time. There's always those nights where it seems the worst case happens to you in every big pot and I can accept that. Even if I dont profit every night I still feel like I can start off with a 200 buyin and if I lose some of that I can make some back and not lose the whole 500 on any given night and be profitable for the whole month.
Normally I go with 200 when i have the extra cash and i know this is a bad choice. It makes me play different and prevents me from mixing it up a bit bc if I lose the 200 I am not able to rebuy and have to take that walk of shame. So how much should I have saved in my bankroll before I head there to take my game to the next level and make it to where Im able to do this on a more frequent semi/fulltime basis?
I am in a position where I should be able to have a bankroll of about 2900 give or take a few hundred. Would I be wsting my time starting here or is this enough to be able to handle the swings in a 1/2 game?
Also, to prevent me from starting another thread, I am looking for some good training books/vids to help improve my game. I know I am good now but I also know there is much to improve on. So what books/dvds do you feel have helped you improve your game? There are so many choices out there that have the same claims but which ones ahould I trust and which are the ones to stay away from?
Thanks in advance to any and everyone who gives a little feedback. Its all very much appreciated. -
if u work and can pay all your bills. then 6k for poker should be plenty. if u are trying to play for bills and life... then i wouldnt start with less than 10k. but no one plays 1/2 for a living for very long

Not playing 1/2 for a living is a good point. I understand this would be a stepping stone to a higher stakes game and I am trying to use this game to build up a bankroll even higher for those games. Thats why I want opinions on a good starting br for a 1/2. 6k is a bit more than I can get together in a short time but thanks for the feedback.
Anyone else out there have any more info? Thanks for reading. -
Pretty much what Archie said. You may underestimate how bad things can go with the cards for a while, even if you're much better than everyone else playing and don't have any issues with tilt. If you log a ton of hours, particularly in very loose and aggressive live games, you will know what I'm talking about. It's very possible and even likely that you will at times go through stretches where you lose 1,000 big blinds ($2k in this case) over the course of a few days. With everyone getting their money in constantly, the swings can be pretty big. What would you do if you lost $500 on each of your first two days? Then you'd be down to only $1,900 in only two days, and you're not guaranteed things will turn around. That's why people recommend having an extra large bankroll for the game such as 5,000 or even 10,000 big blinds. That way if and when you hit downswings, regardless of when they come, you won't start to feel extra pressure to win right away

Is this game raked? if it isnt its a ton easier to make money playing 1-2.... You should definatley have 5-10k to play this game with the correct by the book bankroll....
However, in reality, sometimes its not possible to have the roll when you are just starting out. If its an easy game as you suggest, its ok to take some shots at it... just keep in mind that there will be times that you lose with the best of it.
If you are looking for training sites, poker x factor is a good subscribtion based site- there are a ton of good training sites out there, including the one on p5s.. -
if u cant come up with 6k than i would just try to save as much life money as possible to set aside for poker purposes only. open a new bank account and put your 1/2 money in there. if u can save even a little u will be properly rolled for 1/2 in no time. with way less stress about losing a couple buy ins.

I just wanted to get a rough idea of what my roll should be if i am going to be playing a mixture of:
A) $2.50 180 man turbo's
B) $3.50 180 man turbo rebuy
C) $4 turbo MTT's
I'll only be 4 tabling but i'm guessing it's going to need to be in the region of $600+
Many thanks -
Hey mate, $600ish sounds good. Most people say 1% per BI rule but i do prefer a deeper roll.... Especially on stars :)

GL!
P.S. More than four tables imo.. -
The only way i'll play more than 4 tables is if i buy HEM, you think it'll be a worthwhile purchase? Thanks for the reply, i appreciate it!

It is worth it if you can figure out the damn thing... But 8 tables is easy after a few sessions and HEM would work better going 12+ tables. So i wouldn't buy HEM if I were you but definately practice ur 8tabling

I've been searching for the longest time about BRM and everyone seems to have the wrong answer (by all means im not claiming to have it)... Everyone seems to talk about the ABI and how u should have 100 or 200 buy ins for ur ABI... From personal experience when you have an ABI of 50$ but you grind day in day out u can go on a 10k downswing "fairly" easily... My question to the forum is: How should u calculate your BR when you are playing 40-50 tournaments a day?
Thank you in advance... -
cant really see how it would make a difference whether you play 1 tourney a year or fifty a day with regard to BRM....just get through the downswing faster if you play 50 each day. am I understanding your question correctly?

No and i think its my fault, i wrote this half asleep, what i was trying to ask is how should you adapt volume to your BR? At least i believe you shouold be more nitty with your roll if you play more volume than the avg player... Dunno if i expressed myself well this time around, but oh well i gave it a shot hehe...
-
Lets say you decide on 150 for your bankroll. I know people that play alot of tables at once, will add a buyin to that 150 for each tournament or sng they are playing in. If you are staggering these 50 games a day though, you can just monitor your average buyin if it went down or up alot when you are registering for the next bunch. Or just set it to 200 automatically to start the day (if you go with 150 normally). As an example to that, if you have a $10k roll and using a 200 buyin, you should be averaging no more than $50. If you lose 50 at $50 (really bad day no cashes), the next day you can start out with an ABI of $7500/200 or $37.50.
-
are you saying that statistically you are going to go through more and potentially bigger ups and downs because of the volume. ? cos I think this would be right. so a nittier BR would prob be better.

Wasup Everyone
Looking for input from merge reg's on the best games to grind up a br from say like a $50 deposit. Obv wanna play what your good at, but other than that what games are filling up the quickest? are cash games softer than sng's? any other advice?
I really miss playing as well as the extra bit of income it provides, looking to get back into playing online, even though our options suck atleast there are still some options.
