I dont really agree with bankroll mngment and limiting your buy ins to say maximum $50 or less with a 5k roll. You are losing value by not taking shots at 100$,150$,and 200$ mtts to dramatically increase your roll.Although I guess if you only have 5k and you cant redeposit if you lose, than stick to this BRM crap.
-
Think everyone just has a different threshhold for BRM and most do it without thinking......surely it's aimed at PPl who do not work outside of OL poker and don't have a means of replenishing thier BR. I understand that taking shots and not limiting your potential but if this were really right then if you had a $10K roll....wouldn't you just stick it in the WCOOP high roller event ?

Hey no offence.....wasn't trying to sledge you...was just trying to make a point that

- if you are a loosing player then the stakes you play are probably too big....so maybe BR mngt will help you be a winner by making you play at the level that suits your ability.....only alowing you to move up when you do become a winning player. -
I disagree with this 100%. Many people even if they can redeposit will get to frustrated to redeposit. Many successful players would have gone broke playing cash games their bankroll can't handle or not be able to handle the variance of tournaments. Learning bankroll management is important to do early unless you just keep wanting to be depositing online or have a backer that does bankroll management for you.

Allani BRM is definitly one of the most important if not the main important thing to do with poker.. It keeps your mind at ease when you arnt playing with scared money ect and you play much better.
Obviosly if the player is a losing player then they should be putting there efforts into more training than BRM. -
Having a % rule on your total bankroll is alright but 2% total buyin's for a days session is not good imo. Just doing a quick calculation I buy in for 6-7% of my roll on average per day. This rule needs some definitions such as how big a volume are you playing each day, how often a month do you play, how many tourneys in a session, how many of those tourneys are comfortable in, not as in taking shots but like my favorite type of tourney is a 20rebuy with a 500-1000 field. The more big field and big buyin tourneys you play varience kicks in more.

A cash game with 1 - 2 dollar stakes would need a br of about $10,000.
I derived these rules from trading background that I come from and I am pretty sure these rules will keep your volatility and the risk of ruin to the minimum.
These rules are more important the bigger you br is.
So my point is if you're gonna use this rule (and I think it's fine for mtt's) just make sure to add those other factors in when you settle on a % you're willing to risk on a daily basis -
what is a good bankroll plan, starting with 2000 dollars.Im thinking of playing 6man, 9man,50,18,45,AND 180.4tabling in the 15 dollars,30,and 60 dollars. With each level playing 10 games in the 1 table for total of 90 games and 10 games in 15 dollars for the 18,45,180.that will be 30 games, for a total of 120 games a day. what do think.
-
what do you think of my plan
-
do you have any plans
-
jennifear brm. i have 2000dollar brm where should i start and how many games at that level
-
Start with I like to play mtts. But im looking to build a bank roll an i have a leak, When grinding 1.20 9man sng how much do you have to bank before moving up to 5/6$ sng or really 10$ sngs?
I normally just hop around steaks, what ever i feel like playing for. 6man 20$ double ups 20$mtts. -
I personally like to have 100 buyins and sometimes takes shots with up to 5% or so of my br in mtts
-
o man so 500 for 5$ sng or only taking shots at no higher then 5$ mtts seems hard to follow. some tournaments just jump out an i wanna play them i play alot of turbo stuff

linking to main bankroll management thread, there are a few good articles in the OP and some good talk in the thread itself on ths topic

Hey all! I have never been big on posting online and I'm enjoying this forum and looking to be more active. I'd like to reach out to the winning players and/or inspire aspiring players with this thread. I'd like to discuss how you built up your bankrolls (if you have one!), how you challenge yourself, and what you think are the most important factors to your success.
I played live cash for a living for 5 years going from 2/5 up to 10/25 NLH. I enjoyed a lot of success and really loved it. I'd credit my success to patience, not playing with ego, and good hand reading skills. I played poker with my dad as a child and he would always screw with my head. I think I was somewhat nervous about telling my family I play poker for a living. I was in college and expected to finish and pursue my career. So, with some good poker money I finished and went into the music industry. Now, five years later, I have a lot of fun with music but the money is awful. I always kept playing poker here and there and kept winning. Live cash was good and I made money in online tourneys. I would be forced to cash out and use most of the money on bills. I'm at a point where I am ready to dive back in full time.
I challenged myself to build up from freerolls. I noticed that being short on cash made me play much more timid than is my natural style. I started playing the Fun Steps on Merge and won $1. In a day playing .2c .4c I turned it into $50. I started to play the small rebuy tournaments. I took down a $3 rebuy and had a few other good results. About 2 weeks later I'm sitting on $1350. I'm determined to get this over $10k or higher this year.
How do you guys proceed if you were in my spot? What types of buyin requirements to you hold yourself to? As a live cash player I had about 20 buy ins to games I felt I had a large advantage in. I never got in a danger zone. I've capped myself at $10 for MTTs with $1350 in my roll. I'll allow myself a few larger shots a week if the tourney is really good and I have been doing well. What games are you looking to select? I know it's dependent upon personal strengths, but what worked for you? What are your personal success stories? What do you credit your ability to become a successful MTT player to?
Thanks

Edited By: Bisull Mar 8th, 2012 at 04:18 AMdeposited 50$ on fulltilt about 10 times early 2007, I remember getting that first 50$ up to 780$ in 3-4 nights of 10-20$ sngs and then monkeytilting it all back in a single session playing 50$ sngs... again in 2009, started playing mtt's on pokerstars late 2009 with 50$ and haven't looked back since. opened partypoker after 30% of my roll froze on fulltilt and been building there too. BRM is key to playing and winning gradually imo but shots are important too... I still consider buying driectly into the sunday warmup and the milly a shot and I try as I can to satty into them during the week.Originally Posted by SteveSteelz

Patience is def a virtue when it comes to mtt's and by reading your post it seems like you got a lot of it... in your shoes i'd probably just keep doing what you've been doing, when you feel good take a shot in a 50$ freeze or a 20rebuy, maybe keep a big volume on sundays but lower buyins. -
Very cool! Thanks. I do buy into the Sunday trny for $100 if I can't sat in. I'll play a few others higher than usual up to $30 or $40 if the structure and prize pool are good. I've overdone it online before and I don't want to again. I've won $30 rebuys in the past but I think it's more important to respect my br and get there when it's time. I have a few k stuck on ft also. Really aggravating because I started doing great in their larger tournaments that last month of play. Wish I was outside the US so I could play on stars again. Hopefully soon here....yeah right. Thanks for the info. Best of luck out there.

I've started playing somewhat serious live 1/2 in a home game once a week and have been doing fairly well. A few weeks ago I played 2/3 in Tahoe and finished a little up ($200) over 12 hours or so at the table. I was a winning on-line player before B/F and am starting to feel like I can win at live 1/2. I've heard rumors of juicy 1/2 home games going on that are a 2 and half hour drive away and I have some non-poker playing friends whose couch I could crash on. If and when I make the drive I will probably want to stay and play for 2-3 days. What kind of bankroll do I need to start with to be able to absorb some variance? At the moment I have $500 cash in a drawer set a side from winning the weekly home games over the last few weeks. I'm pretty sure the players will be better than what I'm facing at home. Any thoughts on how much I should build my roll before trying to tackle a new set of unknown players?
-
Typical cash game roll is 20-30 buy ins if you want to do it for a living. If you have low cost of living take a shot. Its not like a $500 bankroll is hard to replace. I'd say whip on the donkey game. Why leave a game you can easily beat?
-
Right now, I'm using 25 buy ins to play 2-5 NL cash for a living, I think this is a decent amount. If I go on a bad downswing... not sure at what point I should drop back down to 1-3? If I go below 20 BI's of what amount X should I be playing 1-3?? I'm thinking if my BI drop's below $300, I should probably play 1-3, but I really don't want to play 1-3 anymore.. I've been adjusting my BI after winning session(s). Started at $300, now buying in for $360, hopefully will be buying in for the $500 max soon.

The bi role is set for buying in max. You really only have 3/5 of the br that you say you have. Variance is a bitch so be careful. Do you have any other source of income that you can add to your roll. I suggest collecting cans, becoming a pimp. Become a dropper our something. I hope you go on a astronomical roll and set yourself up for success

Edited By: jmac3454 Mar 29th, 2012 at 11:44 AMthanks for the response. so, I don't have as many BI's as I thought then.. I have 20 max BI's in BR. Now do you think i'll be ok buying in for $400 instead of $500 at 2-5, or would you recommend dropping down to 1-3 until I'm ready to buy in $500? I'm also new to 2-5 which is part of the reason i've been buying in far less than I should. btw i tried collecting recycle cans once several years ago, and NEVER doing it again.. it's a horrible way to make no more than $5/hr.Originally Posted by yjbrewer

I suggest doing to 1-3. Skill wise there is not that much difference at least the places I have played.good luck

I have huge problems using bankroll managment,, i play online alot. and want to go pro in a few years...(i dont get much chance to play live, and i dont have the stake anyway)
but how much is a good amount to be risking at once? 5% 10%?
