See Where You Rank in Washington

  1. From time to time i get something in me that wants to play higher limits. idk why..so let me start by saying ive been playing .25/.50 and .50/1 50bb's for the last year and half as it being my job why im in college. I do great with the games at these lvls and get rakeback+bounses so that helps. But the problem i run into is losing the grind in my mind and want to make alot of money fast.

So when i get the itch to go play higher 1/2 or even 2/4 i end up running bad and losing. Last 4 or 5 times ive done this ive ran bad and lost a total of prob $2k-$3kish which upsets me seeing i could be playing .5/1 full buyin or even half buying into 1/2 by now.

How can i avoid this crazyness that i do to myself atleast once or twice a month..my br would be nice by now if it wernt for doing this.

Also, i pay my bills and whatever i do with my poker winnings. The only bills i dont pay is living at home still. So my BR is my life roll.
I need to get out of this rut! I kno i can make around $1.5k- $2k a month if i wouldnt do this.

    Someone help me out plz!!

who the fuck moved that...this thread isent gonna get me help at all

  2. In all honesty, what do you want from other people? I'm not trying to be a dick, but you know you shouldn't do it, yet you do it anyway. Other people can't control your actions.

Treat it like your poker game -- figure out what mentally leads you to take these risks and find a way to plug the leaks in your BRM. When does it happen -- after you withdraw? When bills are due? Other personal life problems? etc. If there's a pattern, find the cause and figure out a way around it.

The only practical suggestion is to see if you can exclude yourself from playing at certain stakes. I know it's possible on Stars. But I'm not sure if it's possible on Tilt or whatever other sites you may be playing on.

  7. Probably just have to learn from experience just go bust a few more times or have to get a real job and then you will be able to accept using BRM also probably just need to grow up a little and take poker more seriously. I say all this because this is what it took for me I always knew what proper bankroll mangagement was but for whatever reason never could stick to using it. Took me a couple years of building rolls busting them playing above my stakes and just learning more about life and the real world to motivate me to never want to go bust again... One day it just clicks and you have take it seriously if you want to do this for a living...

    Very well said.

    signed,

-someone trying to make "it click" and "take it seriously" who has blown through a decent 5-figure roll doing stupid shit, mainly casino games.

when you have a bunch of money, then go broke, it reaaaaaaally makes you reconsider/reevaluate what you did to go broke. going on downswings when you don't have a roll is devastating. for me it has definitely impaired my poker confidence at times, but it's also made me study the game harder and not take certain spots and situations for granted.

ideally, the next time I get a solid roll, I'll be a more well-rounded player and capable of making better financial decisions. i can't imagine what it would be like to blow roll after roll after roll. i've only really had a real roll for the stakes i want to play once and losing it will definitely make me appreciate having it next time i get it.

  11. you generally want somewhere between 100-200 buyins for any given level. 100 is more for recreational players and 200 is more for full time professionals.

  14. Both of these are really good and I appreciate the tip. It's tough when I am sitting here at 19, and I have been busto/rebusto more times than I can count and its really sad not having a roll because I know my level of skill is far superior to those @ the local casino. I just don't really know how to get that kick in the ass if you know what I mean. I need some ways to start a bankroll as well, without getting a job.

I appreciate the comments but seeing as this is a game of skill that can be beat, I like my chances. I just don't really know how to get past the barrier, because if I do, my effort will take me to levels I've only dreamed about!

Success in poker is about 20% related to your skill in the game, and 80% the ability to have discipline and control of your decisions.

So, my advice is to grow the hell up. You know what not to do if you want to hang on to your money. Now go and do it!

  25. As you said, a lot of it has to do with growing up. Even more importantly though I'd say it takes humility and to really take a truly process oriented approach to the game. When you truly believe in being process oriented you're no longer going to care that the donks and fish are donks and fish because you know that even if they got you in one spot that you're going to win money off them in the long run.

  26. Once the losing gets painful enough, you will begin to appreciate bank roll management.
    1. Stop playing HOUSE games. Long term (-EV) situation. There is no winning system to beat the casino. You would have to get lucky and quit with a win.
    2. Learn some discipline on your life choices.
    3. Learn what the probabilities are in poker & understand that you are not owed anything from the game nor does playing perfect poker guarantee you will have a winning session.

Variance happens positive & negative (win some & lose some). Most of your winnings will come from your opponent's mistakes (Not because you are a good player).

  28. Some say don't drink and drive, I say don't drink and play poker. I play bad, but was able to turn my $100 roll into a bit over $300. I came home after some drinkies and it only took one 2 outer beat to set me on tilt and poof...$0. All my grinding just to go back to nothing...hopefully I learned my lesson!
