QQ92 UTG+1 , I am soooo new to Omaha hi, what to do with a hand like this in this position. I'm assuming you'd want to have something to back up the queens. Open fold? I know im not explaining this situation very well but in a general sense, what do you do with big pairs in early position with nothing to back em up? Berate me if you will
-
Standard play is to open fold even if you are suited are double-suited (if you're at a full table and not short-stacked).
Sometimes I will limp in with this kind of hand, even UTG+1, provided that certain conditions exist:
1) The BB is a tiny portion of my stack so I have no problem folding to a raise or folding on the flop if I don't hit a set or str8.
2) I'm up against at least a few bad opponents that will give me their stack with a lower str8, lower set, 2 pair or an overpair. Basically, people that are betting hard with hands that would be good if the game were Holdem but marginal or bad in Omaha.
This type of situation will usually only come up during the first hour of the tourney because the blinds will be low and there will be plenty of people playing badly. You didn't specify of this in a tourney or cash game. I suppose that if you are playing the micro limits and you've bought in for the max, you can limp in that situation as well because you can probably expect these things to be true. -
Basically what Ferrengi said. If you're in a game where there are players that will call you down with a worse hand then I say open limp all day. Just don't be the one who is paying off when your set of Queens is up against that flush or straight.
I really love Omaha and it is a big risk/reward game. There are so many more suckouts in that game than any other and you see alot of players tilt pretty hard. I try my best to get my money in good, keep a level head when things don;t work out and try to tkae advantage of those players that play angry after one bad suckout/draw. -
In a tourney, I can't see playing this at all, unless very short of chips in early position- you're playing a three-card hand, and even flops such as JTx aren't great for you, with king quite possibly making someone the nut straight.
Many players more experienced than you tend to overvalue high pairs in this game; while I don't play much limit high (I prefer pot limit), even KK with weak, uncoordinated side-cards is no bargain, here you're looking to flop a set or fold. -
I disagree, in a tourney this hand can have value, especially early on, when lots of weak players will overvalue a flopped smaller set, and you can get a lot of chips in, in a set over set situation, but I am really only playing it, if I can get in cheaply and there are players who will stack off with middle or bottom set.......btw, you are looking to flop top set only.........if you miss, easy fold.
