I checked Hellmuth’s blog and he was writing about how he just lost 500K to Phil Ivey in a game of Chinese Poker while in Monte Carlo.
Wow… half a million bucks in one night. I think he previous biggest loss was 100k, but this is epic. Good thing he’s got the bank roll to support this. But, it’s a great post… he talks about buying a $4000 bottle of wine, and some of his new projects on the go.
Love him or hate him, he certainly is entertaining…
WELL WORTH THE READ:

Should I spend $10,000 on a bottle of wine?
-
I know... unreal. I have to think if I should spend $20 on a bottle, or go for the $10!
These guys live in a different world! Still, interesting to read... -
I don't watch much tv/cable poker-related stuff. But, everytime I see him on tv or read his articles in the magazine, he is the biggest bragger and name dropper in the entire poker world. I think it's pretty funny.
I remember his self-written article about how he avoided casino/non-poker related games early on in his career. Kind of gay to see him play and loss Chinese poker. -
why try to beat ivey in anything unless its for play money
-
Didn't you see the interview? Ivey was lucky. Because we all know, if it wasn't for luck, Helmuth would win everytime. This makes me want to say, guess you couldn't dodge that bullet, bitch!
-
but damn 500k playing freaking chinese poker, ivey seems to make money from everything golf, hold em, chinese poker , betting on anything, sponsors, if he ever wrote a book his funds would be insane from it
-
It had to be luck....not because it's Phil Ivey, but because it's Chinese Poker. Play it sometime and you'll realize how little it has to do with skill. It's hilarious to think that they once even had a wsop bracelet for it!
-
Reading some of these blogs, what the heck does Hellmuth mean when he says Matusow owes him money for booking him in side games??
-
it was kind of cool that he decided to give money to charity because of his loss. That is a real interesting take.
I am not the biggest Hellmuth fan but the reason why he is intensely watchable is perfectly pointed out in this blog. He is vulnerable while being a snob, he literally takes you everywhere with his emotions.
Phil Ivey wouldn't write that blog and that is why Phil Ivey is close to unwatchable for entertainment purposes (meaning people who don't play poker). -
so hes like tim duncan quite and steady and just wins titles and will be remembered for winning
helmuth is like a dennis rodman who has 5 titles but is only remembered for being a loud mouth to grab attention -
Maybe I am just crazy or too damn cheap but if you buy a bottle of 10,000 champagne or drink a gallon of Carlos Rossi for 11.00 won't you still get drunk. Corona or Southpaw will do the same thing. I don't care how rich I will ever become I will still drink my Busch and my moonshine. As far as Hellmuth loosing to Ivey we all know Ivey is the best cash game player around.
-
i used to think the same thing with vodka but after i had absolute grey goose even smirnoff, mccormicks adn bartons dont match up and makes me puke
-
quality over quantity. i'd never drink rossi if iam gonna booze it up..plus iam sure phil isnt drinking just to get drunk.. that being said, i feel funny spending even 30 bucks on a bottle of wine. 12 pack of corona is good for any occasion.
-
what i really liked about his blog was the fact that after losing half a mill, he donates 50k to charity, and pays down his mortage. He then pretty much tricked his mind into thinking his poker roll was in trouble (it isnt), so he "uses all his powers" to play his best. Thats one thing ive done myself, as far as cashing out a large chunk of my roll, so i can grind back up again and try to play my best. Personally, whenever I win a nice chunk, I start caring less about the buyin and play like an idiot. Anyways, cool blog.
-
I like the fact that he even blogged about it. I mean, if I lost 500K, I'd prolly hide my head in the sand.
-
you're just cheap :)
at some point the idea becomes to savor the taste and enjoy the experience instead of just getting wasted.
like anything, if you've never had the opportunity to try the best (wine, food, liquors, etc) you really don't know what you're missing, and that's a good thing!
my uncle is a wine guy. i was stupid enough to drink some $1000+ bottles over the holidays this year. carlos rossi tastes like piss now. :( -
find me a better drink then a grey goose martini my god
-
Hilarious. I don't think its out of the question that Hellmuth got plated by Ivey and Antonious. He is the perfect target...just something to think about.
-
That's like saying why would you eat filet mignon if hotdogs will just get you fed.
Not all of us drink to get drunk. -
STAG Beer rules!
-
do you guys think 500k is even that much of a hit to hellmuth's financial situation with all the business shit he's got going on?
-
well, half a million is half a million. He does have a ton of business stuff going on though. Its prob not a hit to his situation, but like he kinda alluded to, he couldve bought 10k$ bottles of wine, and he could only fly first class (i cant see phil flying coach, "do you know who i am??"). Prob. just a flesh wound to him, but damn, sometimes even paper cuts can sting.
-
lol @ Big pimpin!
-
We are supposed to feel sorry for him? give me a break. He made the choice to gamble. He'll win it back at the next few events anyway. Just look at his schedule.
-
an interesting watch is the interview on www.pokertube.com about cash games
i think phil is a very very clever guy!! -
phil hellmuth probably realizes that top online and live poker players can alot in one day and he wants to be one. Phil hellmuth will win the 2007 WSOP. ithink
