I will be 55 this year. I started playing poker on line just about 4 years ago and I truly enjoy the game. One of the things I have decided I need/want to do is play in the WSOP. It does not have to be the main event, but I want to go play. I am fortunate enough that I could just go pay and play but it should not be that simple. My wife, and I have to say I agree, commented that yes fine, go play, but you have to make the money you will need playing. If you cannot make the money playing at the $25-50 dollar level, well then you have no business playing for $1500+. Well, I happen to agree with her (may be part of the success to our 30+ year marriage) so I am setting out to do that. I am estimating that to do what I want to do, enter 2 or 3 of the preliminary events and hopefully cash enough to enter the Main Event I am going to need +/- $10,000.
I don’t have a lot of the time that many do to play. My work day starts around 5 AM and I don’t get home much before 6 PM. I think that in my four years of playing I have played less than 3,000 SNG/MTT’s. I do believe that I have the skills to succeed in this challenge. I am not an idiot (in spite of what my shark scope may say J) I graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy, graduated law school and traded commodities rather successfully for 20 years+. I just need to buckle down and improve my game. I do honestly believe that I can be successful at the levels I currently play. I figure I have 10 months to make $10,000 and intellectually that does not seem that difficult.
I have a few thoughts on what I need to focus on up front which I will lay out, and I am looking for any other guidance.
1) Play sober poker. I cannot calculate how much money I have lost playing after a few vodkas, a bottle of wine with dinner and a handful of Heinekens while I play. There are times I think that the alcohol added in the aggression factor to help win the odd table or two, but honestly believe long term it has been –EV.
2) I need to learn to focus more on what the OP has. I tend to play my cards—of course my TPTK is good…..not
3) I have taken a few lessons from Jen which have been very useful, unfortunately once again my shark scope is not going to be a raring endorsement for her, but read point 1. So I think I will go back for another lesson or two.
4) I have been a subscriber to PXF for about 1 ½ years…..maybe I should actually watch some of their videos….suspect it has been 6 months since I have done that.
You may question why I have made this post. I have done it to make a personal challenge public thereby to put the pressure on myself to succeed. Any suggestions are more than welcome and it the true spirit of PK5’s I expect to get a lot of grief….but such is life.
Thanks for reading and hopefully some will wish me luck….

All the best of luck to you, youngster.

There are some things you can do.
1. Do get back to PXF and watch.
2. Try and win a seat from one of the many sites that have them offered.
3. Go to Vegas anyway and try to win one of thier SnG's for various seats.
4. Play the cash games while in Vegas during the WSOP...at any hotel...usually way more money on the cash tables during the series than normal.
5. Make a deal with your wife...play the series in exchange for something that she really want(ed)s to do but has never done.
6. I agree with the playing sober...if you want to drink and play....go wild in the very low limit games and blow off some steam or practice new moves.
Have fun and enjoy the journey
Best of luck

i have not played any wsop event but i will still disagree with your wife about having to make the money in $50 events to play in a $1500 live event. i play $5 to $10 tourneys mostly online and feel that i am way above average and can average a great roi in the long run in them....i have been to a few casinos and played $50ish events and these players are extremely horrible and do not understand any concepts. not every player playing in the $1500 event is amazing...most prolly are average players. i think if u can beat the game at lower limits u will be at least average in the smallest buy in in wsop.
