After reading many articles, tournament updates and rankings on this site and seeing young person after young person featured with their multiple wins, it got me wondering does anyone 30 or over have any success in online poker? I'd like to hear some stories from people 30 and over that are overall winners in online poker. What levels do you play and how much per week do you play? Please don't list the obvious like Lederer,Fergueson,Helmuth or other older pros. The only one I ever recall seeing a story about on this site was Gator something or other. I think his name is Frank. Is online poker today just a game for the youth or are their successful older people winning at this venue?

I am 39 and have been winning for 2 years online on all sites but I am a small timer. My ABI is about $7 with almost $5k total profit. Although with a proper bankroll I do believe I would succeed at the medium levels.
There are a lot of factors that make the young players have the edge online but I simply believe that the biggest edge they have is that they can spend all the time neccesary to be succesful online. With no Kids, family, job etc etc... online poker is all about volume volume volume and to do that you need lots of free time on your hands. -
parttime/smalltime grinder here at 45. abi just under $9 with a 32% roi over 4100 games. been profitable since early '06, still playing off my initial $50 depo on FT. years of experience doesnt go away just cause we had back to back youngest ever ME champs.

I am 45 and play recreationally. I try to play fairly often, usually after the family is asleep. Overall, I am up over $2k and have an ABI of $14. Both are skewed due to a nice cash in this year's WCOOP for almost $2700. But, prior to that I was up close to $1000 in SNGs which were mainly $5 buyins on 2 & 3 table SNGs. I have been playing since mid 2006 and have worked to improve my game. It is lots of fun. I am pretty sure there are a couple of big time online players who are close in age to me. Phatcat (slimshaggy on pokerstars) is 36 years old and at one time was in the top 10. JohnnyBax is 43. To your point, most seem to be young, 18 to 25.

I'm 82 years old and I love pwning you young whippersnappers!!!

phatcat is pretty good imo

I'm 43 with an ABI of $17 and 34k profits over the last 3 years. I play mostly $ 5-12 MTT's but I do move up some according to my available bankroll. Have made most of my decent scores in the $ 8.80 or 11 rebuys. I play mostly late evenings after the family has gone to bed or the odd morning that my shift doesn't start until the afternoon.
I believe you can be profitable against the typically much younger players but you have to be aware of the advantages they have when playing against you. While you were working to support your family they were catching up on the sleep you both lost from going deep the previous evening. When you were picking up your kids from the daycare and dropping them off at girl guides, scouts, swimming lesson, birthday parties, etc., they were watching poker videos on a training site and absorbing the information needed to improve their game. While you were thinking about your household bills, mortgage, wife's birthday, and upcoming christmas expenses, they were thinking about the line they took against you in a big pot yesterday. Being young affords you a clarity of mind and singularity of purpose that we can not match, but experience does have value. It allows us to better handle downswings/variance and take bad beats with the maturity to not tilt off our bankroll. Also, in your 30's and 40's, drinking and getting laid are no longer major life issues.
GL to all of us " elderly " players. -
just because you're old doesn't mean you're more experienced. a lot of full time online grinders play more hands in one or two months than most "experienced" older live players have played in their lives.

Im sure there are quite a few.
As was mentined Bax and i think sheets is 30+ and moneymaker won the wednesday 1/4m last night
Im 33 and only got into poker a couple of years ago but had a one 6 figure score live last year and am around $34k up in MTT's for 09 on my first real year playing volume on stars with ABI of $45 however going to be upping the ABI pretty soon , and making a bit in cash games too.
I just think generally the 18-30 bracket have more hunger and stamina for massively grinding so theyre more likely to be the ones in the top 100 etc
Old people FTW! -
Dyzalot FTW

true...but. in a rare moment of lucidity Lederer mentioned that just because you play all these hands doesn't alone make you more experienced. you still have to assimilate the information and that happens in real time.

I am old, (45+) and meet your criteria af "overall winner" ($100,000K+) The thing is, I suck at poker, so I can't really make a decent living at it. The $ I have won is over 5+ years.
I play low buyin sngs mostly, as I suck and can't beat good players. As far as how much per week I play, I really don't have the health or stamina to play as much as I would like/need to make a living.
I also suck at life, and and shopping around for a good bridge to jump off of. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. -
By the time a "kid" is able to play at a casino he's probably played more hands than Doyle Brunson. Players who came to poker in their 30s or 40s have a hard time catching up.

I am probably one of the oldest players registered here (59). I made 2 deposits (both $100) about 4 years ago...and have made nothing but withdrawals since.
Not a huge winner, but a fairly consistant winner.
You really become more conservative (on the whole) as you get older, and that probably reflects on how you play the game. There are many things that I did when I was in my teens and early twenties, that I would not ever consider doing now.
Also, when you are under 30, you have many years to recover from going bust and can afford to take more chances. Play very agressive, put all your $$$ on the line. If you go broke...so what....you still have many years to recover. I had no money more than once when I was young...but I never really worried about it.
Not sure what I would do today if I had no money and my age...I really don't want to find out...so...I play within my roll...take the odd chance....learn from the young guns and have fun. I really don't want to be 20 again...I like my place in life now. I have worked too hard to piss it away at the poker table. -
I'm 33 and I think it's an advantage for me. I've been playing longer than most. So, while my original learning of the game is somewhat outdated, I've kept up with the new stuff that's out there also. i.e. forums, training sites. I'm not as tight as some of the older generation, and not as crazy as some of the youngsters. I'm not even sure what you'd call my style, probably mostly TAG, but whatever it is, it works for me. There are obvious disadvantages too though. I have way more personal and financial responsibilities than the average 20 something. I can't play as much as I'd like to sometimes, but I'm not sure that's even a bad thing to be honest. I still enjoy playing most of the time, so maybe the amount I play is just right. There are plenty of good players out there over 30. We're just way outnumbered. I still consider myself a part of the younger generation when it comes to this game. I'm not old, just a little older is all:)

Online poker has been around for a while now, some old school folks who were 25 and were grinding 5 years ago are 30 now. I don't think age is necessarily a limiting factor in poker acuity. Getting good at poker requires discipline and hard work, and to some extent (depending on how high stakes we are talking) natural talent, there are no age restrictions on that.
-
perhaps, but online players have many more tools to analyze the hands like pokerstove and other programs, not to mention the ability to go over hand histories that you've played an replay the hands like in a hh replayer. this is a HUGE advantage that a live player simply doesn't have.
-
My online experience has allowed me to make plays at live events that work a high percentage of the time as I am 48 and most of the live players my age in tourneys have no clue other than ABC poker and a few bluffs. Most players don't see me coming when I'm at a live event . I certainly don't let on that I play a ton online.
-
there are some of us over 30 who grind pretty consistently...i'm 35 and play 30-40 mid-high $$$ MTTs a week, been doing so for over 3 years now and carved out a nice little profit. i'd love to see a PLB leaderboard for us old timers but i can't figure it out...i can't even figure out how to work the damn VCR!!!

geez 100k over 5 years is still very good!!!

I think he was referring to the maturity of someone older and how they have better control over their emotions and get less "tilty". Although they may be true on the whole lately when I go to foxwoods to play some 2/5 NL Ive been seeing alot of older individuals who you would think would have control over their emotions, acting like immature idiots - complaining about how bad people play, getting sucked out on, etc....Pretty sad
