"The Boston Globe reports that Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is trying to sneak a provision to criminalize online gambling. The bill, if passed, would make online gambling punishable by up to 2 years in prison and $25k in fines. Ironically, the provision is buried deep within a bill to allow the construction of three new casinos in Massachusetts to bring more gambling revenue into the state. 'If you were cynical about it, you'd think that they're trying to set up a monopoly for the casinos,' said David G. Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Democratic House representative Barney Frank, who earlier this year introduced federal legislation to legalize regulated online gambling, also criticized the move as 'giving opponents an argument against him.' Indeed, groups such as the Poker Player's Alliance, who were previously supportive of Patrick's plans to open the new casinos, have already announced opposition to the bill because of the online gambling clause."
  2. yea bc jails arent full enough

    what a moron

    put him in jail
  3. ^^^ i lol'd
  4. I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the other provision buried deep in the bill that calls for an enhanced mandatory minimum prison term of 8 years, if the aggravating factor of playing while under the influence of marijuana exists.
  5. I'm just imagining myself standing infront of a judge facing two years for playing online poker... Wtf would i say? "Are you serious? I'm going to jail for this...? Lolz retarded punishmentaments."
  6. Did anyone ever define Online Poker as Online Gambling. Cause all this talks about is on line gambling.
  7. Foxwoods is the only casino in New England that even offers poker. Not that this legislation isn't stupid enough, but it obviously seems like they want to force people to have to go to the new casinos to play rather than from thier couch. Most likely these 3 new casinos wont even have poker, so they will make it illegal to play from home, yet not offer it anywhere else either.
  8. It actually uses the term "wager". Section 15(i)

Would you like to be the test case if this passes?
  9. just saving society from the filth that is online poker players, these guys are dangerous, just sit in their rooms all day on a computer, theyre already practically in jail
  10. Wake up everyone about one thing. This online poker provision is in this bill because the land-based casino companies want it there! I guarantee you this bill was written by a lobbyist for the casinos. Why don't land casinos realize that online poker is good for poker and good for them? Before I started playing poker online, I NEVER frequented a casino. Now I still don't go a lot, but my 10-12 visits a year are 10-12 more than i made before i started playing online.
  11. ^^^^ very good point. I never had the motivation to go to a casino until I started playing online either. the casinos and our government def need to get their heads out of their asses.
  12. same here.... i never stepped foot in a casino until i started playing online.... since then i've probably been 20-30 times... that's 20-30 times they gotten rake from me that they wouldn't have before

it's the same crap that the music industry did with Napster. Napster was causing people to buy more music because they would find some obscure band that they liked and go pick up the whole album. The music industry was too blind to see that though, and ran them out of business so that they could set up their own online download sites and encrypt the music with tons of anti-piracy measures.
