  1. Had to share this little story....

Drove 3 hours from my home city Canberra Australia (the capital of Australia) to Star City Casino in Sydney to play in a satelitte to a $500K tourney held in mid december. To my surprise they announce that Phil Gordon is playing in the tourney as part of his visit to australia. Even better i drew seat 5 on the feature table, he is in seat 3. About an hour goes by, he has scooped a few pools and comments that he is "still undefeated in the southern hemisphere" . I won a few pots and have increased my stack from $5k to about $5.5K.

I am the big blind (150) and it is folded to Phil on the button, who raises to 500 to go. small blind folds and look down to Pocket 5's..... (actually i looked at my cards early because i wanted to make sure Phil thought i was a total donkey) I call. Flop came out 8 5 2 rainbow...... I hit my set.... now what do i do?????

I obviously check, then Phil makes it 900.... i thought about slow playing for a moment and then i had a brain wave.... i went ALL IN hoping he thought i was just a schmuck trying to steal a pot and tell my mates i bluffed PHIL GORDON.... worst case scenario for me was he had trip 8's or catches a card and i go out being beaten by a pro. He quickly calls with pocket queens and i take most of his chips. HE is left with only 600 chips left....

He went all in next hand with 77 and got called by the big blind K6 suited and was knocked out when a K hit the flop.

I went out the next day and bought his new book, saw him in the poker room the next day and he was happy to autograph it for me.....

Saying " To John, See you at the final table, My first defeat in the southern hemispherse... PHIL GORDON, 27 nov 2006 sydney australia"

By the way, i finished 7th in the 100 person tourney, bubble boy as 6 seats were awarded, although the above story made my weekend .

  2. Good story. Flopping the set on that board was great. Phil should have wondered what you had. In his Little Green Book, he talks about an overpair not being a strong hand in a big pot. He should have taken his own advice.

Phil Hellmuth would have made the lay down.
