A friend of mine has come up with an idea that is both genius and very stupid.
I was once quite athletic, I ran a few marathons, lifted weights, little bit of boxing etc.
In the last 8 months I have gone from a fighting weight of 186lbs to a blobby 202lbs.
This has been due to:
New Girlfriend means I have been complacent at the gym (because I am no longer out sarging every weekend for some skirt so I dont care how big my arms are)
New Girlfriend means I go out more and indulge on rich food
I play poker
I am now back in training and have entered my local Marathon as a milestone to get me back down to 186. There is no way on earth I am giving up poker because I love it and I am winning.
My friend has now suggested a kill two birds with one stone initative to help me with my weightloss. Basically, everytime I do something unfavourable playing poker, I force myself to do some sort of quick excercise. So for example, if I lose a hand I have to do 10 pressups. If I lose a hand but get dealt something good straight away like Kings, I will wait til that hand is done (and of course if it loses I would double my pressups)
Although I will look a total gimp to anyone looking at me through the window by my PC playing poker one minute and doing burpees the next, I see this as a win-win situation because:
<DIR>
1.At the end of every session I either win money or I get fitter
2.The negative reinforcement might sharpen my game , might make it a bit more diciplined, I've been playing a bit too loose lately so I will be much more inclined to throw my ace junk away.
3.Much less likely to go on tilt because I wont have the energy
4.If I do go on tilt, I'll be ripped.
</DIR>
I shall keep you all updated as to just how clever/stupid an idea this is, below is my current criteria which I am following, if anyone has any other suggestions to ways I can lose pounds while Im winning dollars I'm all ears.
So if you see a strange guy doing squat-thrusts making the highlight reel at this years WSOP show, you know who it is. <SCRIPT><!-- D(["mb","

Hmmmm, good idea! I could stand to lose many an extra pound myself!
I'd like to add:
Call someone else a fish/donk or otherwise berate a payer: 10/10/10
Educate a fish after a bad play (see Fox' article the Professor): 20/20/20
Go against my gut/read and lose: 30/30/30
Slowplay a winner into a loser: 20/20/20
Now I just have to figure out what pressups and star jumps are and get off my lazy ass... mmm that donut over there looks mighty nice... -
I just bought a treadmill <1k yesterday to keep active. I convienintly located it next to my computer. Muahahahah!!

For a long time I would go ride my bike everytime I took a bad beat or made a bad play. I still do it sometimes but I am not playing w/ my bike shoes on anymore.

I swear about 6 months ago I was 180 and rock solid. I stopped working and played poker thinking oh boy with my own schedule I can lift all the time. Boy was I wrong. Now I drink too much and as you said I am a flabby 200 pounds almost exactly identical to yourself. Needless to say I like your idea now im inspired to go to the gym. Thanks bro.

Good stuff, we should update each other, be like online gym buddies or something.
I was lifting big, fast, fit etc. Now my back is going into spasms after I lifted my weekly food shopping out of the car.
I just have visions of me putting my back out on the floor and not being able to get to my pc in time when I get dealt bullets. I guess that would make a decent bad beat story. -
I just made one of the best purchases----Precor 5.17EFX Elliptical.
I have it in my home office / exercise room. I set up my laptop at eye level by attaching a TV tray to the top of an adjustable flower stand that I bought at Home Depot. I started by stacking a tray table on top of a chair but I kept knocking the damn thing over. The flower pot stand is key!
I'm normally a treadmill guy but it's nearly impossible to take notes, work the mouse, etc. while bouncing up and down. The Precor is so smooth that you dont even need to slow down to do both at the same time.
GG beer gut! -
play cards while working out, GENIUS!

Haha... I've been doing the poker & excercise for a while now... good to others joining in...

Wow. It's scary how much we are similar in this. Not too long ago, I was maxing my bench at 265 and I weighed about 175. Pretty recently, I weighed almost 210 and couldnt bench 50 lbs. without my arms snapping in half. I cut down on the drinking and food and now I weigh prolly 190 or so. But still, my body has gone to shit. Yesterday, I was at dinner with my wife and was eating a plate of cheese fries. LOLOL. She was telling me how she was showing her best friend (who is married to my best friend) pictures of me from awhile back. She said that he friend goes, "Oh my GOD. He was HOT!!!!" I felt like I let my wife down from letting my body go to hell in a handbasket because now she has to say, "My husband used to be buff...." Along with that convo and this post, I am more dedicated now to stop smoking and get back to working out. THANKS!!!

geez, i though that i had it down pat when i ran to the kitchen to get a new bag of chips to eat, or ran to the snack bar for the cheese filled pretzel, you got me crushed with you routine!!

Update
Well its been a week, I have lost 3lbs and I have pretty much broken even at the tables.
I have been throwing away more junk hands as a direct result which is a postive, generally I have played pretty well and went out just before the FT twice this week. I have also stopped slowplaying monsters which has probably saved me money and heartache.
The weight loss has mainly been due to diet and general exercise as opposed to the fact that I have been doing star jumps everytime I lose with the idiot end of a straight, but it certainly has helped.
My aim for next week is to lose another 3lbs and to make a FT.
