  1. Hi guys, I am writing a paper for my english class on poker. The point of my paper is to prove that poker is a game of skill rather than luck. I was hoping to get a few good ideas about what you all think would be good to add. I do add in the paper that there is of course a luck factor involved in the game. Anything you guys think would be important to add would be very helpful. Thanks alot.
  2. I would start out by showing how Brunson totally dominated the game with skill in the 1960s and 1970s. Talk about Mike Caro and other revolutionaries who proved the overwhelming skill factor in poker. For your luck factor, tell your teacher that I just lost a 7k pot in the 9500 guaranteed with AA against 6 10 off because I always have to sit next to the chip leader. GL go Buffaloes.
  3. jimb, give me an email @ sunkentheory@gmail.com and I will help you get some insight on this
  4. There have been a number of places where people have posted the results of logging thousands of hands, and shown that certain statistics are indicative of a profitable player. For limit ring games it's almsot down to a science. 16% preflop 1.8 aggression factor after the flop, and winning over 55% of showdowns. I would think that would be some good simple proof of skill being the dominating factor in poker. check out the pokertracker forums for some of this stuff.
  5. Jim feel free to email me at Supermoves@aol.com and I can help you out, but I think a very common sense thesis would be "The same group of 50 or so players is at the top of the money list every year." This should prove that poker is a game of luck not skill. If you chronichaled (sorry about the spelling) Daniel Negraneu or Doyle Brunson or Stuey Unger, certainly you could prove that their skill is what keeps them in the money. Also, it is important to make it clear that "poker is about decisions and pshycology". Many people who dont play often or just play for fun, dont understand the intricacies. If you simply bet when you have a good hand and fold when you dont, poker is mostly about luck. The fact is, that is EXACTLY how most people play. Your average player doesnt think about pot odds, implied odds or what his opponant is likley to have, he just bets his aces and folds is 6-4os lets luck determine who wins. I think that is another important distiction.
