Hard to stand behind many political causes as a business owner, but I will back this one up 100%. John Kyl is the single biggest enemy of our industry.

Kyl is a douche; unfortunately the guy he's running against is also a douche and stands no chance of knocking out of the senate.

Kyl is running a commercial where his fellow senator -- John McCain -- is quoting a favorable Time magazine article.

(Heck, they're both the same party. Why wouldn't McCain support Kyl?)

The Time article rates Kyl as "one of the ten best senators in the country." Based on what? The commercial doesn't say.

Just because Kyl co-sponsored the Safe Ports Act doesn't mean he's anti-online poker. The darn bill supports motherhood and apple pie! The backroom deal that put the online gambling provisions in the bill is reprehensible.

Arizona is a Republican state. (Remember Sen. Barry Goldwater?) Kyl's opponent is not likely to win, especially against an incumbent.

That opponent, Jim Pederson, himself is a jillionaire. He reminds me of the great Ross Perot, maybe not so wacky.

I'm very sorry to hear that because Arizona is likely to re-elect him. I haven't heard of him threatening to abolish the state lottery, however. That gambling is good, I guess.

However, there is a New York Times article that claims a substantial growth in independent voters within the state.

Here's quote from the senator's own .gov website from a press release entitled <SPAN class=headline>Congress Approves Kyl Internet Gambling Ban:</SPAN>

“It’s been over ten years in the making. The enforcement provisions in this bill will go a long way to stop these illegal online operations,” said Kyl. “This ban will help authorities enforce existing federal and state laws.”
“A professor once appropriately likened Internet gambling to cocaine use. Internet gambling’s characteristics are unique, because: online players can gamble 24 hours a day from the comfort of their home; children may play without sufficient age verification; and betting with a credit card can undercut a player’s perception of the value of cash, leading to possible addiction and, in turn, to bankruptcy, crime, and suicide.”

Now online poker equals cocaine?? I think he's using mind-altering substances himself.

Then it seems the choice is to vote for the clown who favors your position over the clown who doesn't. BTW, the last 3 polls show the gap has closed between the two to under 6%. There is definitely a possibility here as long as Pederson can keep running ads and does an effective job at getting out the vote. Both require money; ship some tokes to Pederson.

Yes, AZ is a big poker state, espically the Phoenix, Scottsdale area. I am just not sure how faithful B&M players feel about playing online. Maybe we could get some lobbying in all the AZ cardrooms. There are alot of people that now think they cannot go near a computer to play poker, and have no idea many of the sites are up and running.

They are next right? I mean if online players can lose their freedoms why not them? Do you think Kyl thinks that B&M's are less harmful to the family?

I too fell for a lot of the smaller candidates when I was younger. They just sounded better than the options availble to me. Over time I realized that I had to compromise what I want with what is best. At this point, on this day, Pederson and Ford are best for us given the opposition.

IMO if you vote liberatarian you are wasting a vote given what is at stake in these elections. I consider myself a liberatarian too, I identify with them way more than the other two parties but I won't be wasting my vote to show that some no name no one got a few votes as a symbol of rebelling against a broken system. Do that when it doesn't matter, not now.

A liberterian vote is as good as a Kyle vote

I have been thinking that the PPA and similar groups should specifically target Kyl similar to what the NRA does with anti-gun candidates. This is a great start.

Taking down a senator that if he wins would likely be the Republican Minority/Majority leader would be a huge talking point for the PPA. They could basically say, "Don't fuck with us" or we'll decide that you're the next target.

On trips to Las Vegas, I asked people if they played poker online. An awful lot of them said they do. This includes older people as well as the obvious kids in the Pokerstars hats. I was surprised that the older people played online. There were quite a few Party players; what they're doing now, I have no idea.

I wish that Congress had debated this long and hard as a separate bill instead of tacking it on an overwhelmingly popular bill in the last hours before the recess.
