1. Looks like a not so flatering report on college age players///
2. Coming up within the next 15 minutes or so. Looks like something about Poker students getting hooked on poker..

3. <---college student hooked on poker
1
4. I bet they talk soley on college kids running up HUGE DEBTS......

5. college student + no sleep + no studying = me
6. College kids running up huge debts whose majors include political science and psychology. $20K-25K in student loans looks like a lot when your first job out of college will pay $25K-30K.

(Whereas I'm smart and chose a major that will make me some actual $$$$$$$ and an internship this summer that is actually PAID)
7. Let the spin begin... These kind of stories are going to become more and more
common as they try to garner support for a ban.
8. That's if you're an unintelligent psych or political science major. I, for one, plan on pursuing a doctorate, which will pay just fine thank you.
9. of course they interview 'the donk whose lost thousands'.....

10. ur a prick - u must be "un intelligent if u are not a doctor"

what an ass
11. JACK ASS U CAN GET A DOCTORATE IN PSYCHOLOGY

SHOWS HOW SMART U ARE
12. and truthfully, there probably aren't that many more stories of 'guy runs family into heavy debt' than there are stories of 'guy helps family get rich' but the TV has their agenda, and covering an issue impartially doesn't fit that agenda.
13. does anyone know who was interviewed? I know there was a news special w/ stevesbets a while back...
14. It was some donkey college student who is now emotionally disturbed because he's in the hole $2000. He also blames gambling on his lack of academic success and track performance or something like that...

15. Two things of note. He was shown playing Bodog NL ring $10 buy-in (DONKEY), and he was re-raising with 25o, bottom pair, on a two suited T57 board (DONKEY).

They will never interview many of the super successful college players like green plastic or several ranked tournament players here. I guess they are unaware high school kids are playing online as well, because they didn't get into that. Although the only couple of high school kids I know are super sickos making more than most working adults do in 5 years.
16. People can be intelligent all they want, whether they be doctors, rocket scientists, middle school english teachers, or construction workers (my 9th grade history teacher is the smartest person I have ever met). My POINT was that people who are digging themselves into holes of college debt are taking out this debt to earn a degree that HISTORICALLY does not pay well.

Having a gambling problem that puts you $30K in the hole after college is fine if you graduate with a degree in engineering, architecture, ect. that will pay you well.

I shouldn't have singled out psychology or pol. sci., and it did come across that I was calling them dumb, and I am sorry that was not my intention. I just know a lot of kids who are taking out huge loans and not even thinking about grad school (congrats if you are, you'll probably out-earn me) for these majors which will really not land them a good job anywhere.

Again sorry, it was not a personal attack it just makes me upset that people go to college and don't think about their futures (which again, going to grad school shows that you are on the right track, I wasn't making fun of that).
17. Guys: poker is a negative sum game. A very small minority of players are making a lot of money, and more than 90 percent of the people who play are net losers. I happen to be doing well playing it, and i love the game, but keep your eye on the ball here. There are a lot of people who are losing a lot of money playing this game. And they vastly outnumber the people who are profitable. Just food for thought.
18. Regardless of the merit or lack there of in this news piece, what I think is really important about stories like this, and what should be a worry to all of us, is that mainstream news is beginning to pick up on the so called "dangers" of online poker. It is exactly stories like this that will freak out soccer mom's in the flyover states, and they'll start badgering they're Member of Congress, children's schools, etc, pushing this issue further into the spotlight where we really do not want it to be. I guess my point is that stories like this is bad news for all of us, and it is exactly what will put some momentum behind pieces of legislation like the fuck face Goodlatte's Internet Gambling Prohibition Bill.
19. i know we aren't arguing over this, as we probably agree here, at least I agree with what you say in your post.

However, just because people are net losers doesn't mean they are running their families into debt, which is what most of these 'gambling/human interest stories' would have you believe. Most of the stories written by non-gamblers (or at least non-serious gamblers) make it like two things can happen when you play poker on the internet; 1-you lose your shirt, house, cars and your family abandons you or 2-you win millions. The truth, which they don't report, is way in the middle of both of those scenarios. Guessing, I'd say 1% are huge huge winners...10% actual winners...about 88.9% actual losers...and about .1% losers to the point that they ruin their lives (which they would ruin in other ways if they couldn't do it through gambling).
20. No, I think we're mostly on the same page. The truth, as usual, is somewhere in the middle. I think your figure for problem gamblers is low though. For the B&M casinos it is somewhere from 4-6 percent, and online gaming is potentially much more addictive and accessible.

I agree 100% about the political timing of the story though. And yes, I am sure there will be more of this over the next few months.
21. I guess this can't really be surprising and I would figure it is just the beginning since poker has become the biggest 24/7 reality show on earth.

Don't know if I agree about the political timing as it seems that this story was probably a bit late in coming out given the popularity of poker. Lets face it. College kids aren't exactly known for doing things in moderation.
22. I'd love to see a news story about lottery donks.
"I bought $100 worth of scratch cards and I won $80 THIS IS MY BEST DAY EVER"
23. Never will happen. The Gov will frown upon cuz they get tax dollars. That is what this comes down to, is people wanting tax dollars, and if it doesn't benefit us as a nation, it must harm our nation. They will never show the succesful college player, and they will never make poker anything more than a game of luck.
24. LOL, doesn't this seem kinda weird that NBC just made a promotion to have a COLLEGE Student win into the NBC HU Poker Championship?!? HAHA
25. ehh? Sounds a bit hypocritical to me because they are airing the HU championship on NBC. Doesn't NBC realize that if they show poker college students might get interested and start playing. Just my view on this.
26. I doubt its the network. Some politicians may have given some generous "donations" for them to shoot and air this piece.
27. The bottom line here is that poker, like any gambling can be addictive and in extreme cases causes lives to be ruined etc etc etc. However, it is no worse than alcohol or smoking in this regrd which have equally devastating results in the worse case scenarios.

Whilst the argument that it should be banned is valid from this regard, wher do you dra the line at banning things that have harmful effects on people? If an extreme view is taken of all things that aren't good for you then you could easily argue that smoking, drinking, eating fatty foods et should all be banned, which would be ridiculous.

I think people (esp. the govt and the media) should keep these things in perspective and realise that there will always be people who do not act responsibly, however you cannot punish those that enjoy things in moderation by placing a total lockdown on anything that could be potentially bad news for a small minority.
28. completely agree
29. WTF is college?

30. Just my 2 cents but I would have to think that the number of in debt and heavy losers is more than .1% . I love poker and I agree that many people are overall losers at the game, but are addicted to the game. Just like any other addictions these people need help, and with poker being so popular now the problem has become much greater. Many people see poker as a sport but its a sport that can take away everything you have. Unlike the college student that plays basketball for fun. You are silly to say that this is not an issue today.
