Okay, seems I am seeing this pretty regularly now and I guess it perplexes me:
Example:
KTT92 board. 4 handed, pot is say, 480. Checked to river. Player bets 550. Called by A9. He shows KTT. I just saw this happen. I can think of many similar examples of this I've been seeing recently. It's not called everytime so I can't say for certain what the bettor had, but I'd say 75% of the time I see a showdown the guy has the nuts.
Is the thought process that an overbet signals weakness whereas a value bet (say 200) shows strength? Which is more likely to be called?
I play MTTs and SNGs $5-$10 so unsure if this is a micro phenomenon or what.

Largely depends on the players involved in the hand. At the micro levels though, anything goes :). I've seen it go both ways so I wouldn't say that pot size betting every time means they are trying to show a bluff. Just pay attention to their other bet sizes and see if they only do this when a calling station is involved in the hand (value bet them to death!). You can usually pick off when they're bluffing or trying to bait someone to play back at them. If the guy is overbetting the pot every flop, turn and river then you should be able to get the hint that he's bluffing at least a good portion of the time.

its not a phenomenon. its just a play that sometimes works if people always wanna call bs on someone when theyre 'buying the pot'

Their logic is simple: 'Damn, I forgot to build to pot when I was slowplaying... I better do it now.' Lower buy ins they always have the nuts when overbetting the pot (unless an overbet is shoving, then there's a better chance its a bluff because they feel desperate and need chips'. U even see this a lot at higher stakes too.

it usually means the guy has the nuts....all you are seeing is why hero calls there are spewtastic
