I thought the commercial was awful.
An effective commercial needs to make three points quickly and repetitvely. The commercial tried to make 12-13. The imagary and voices were scattered, confusing and jumbled. Only the Sexton sound bites cut through the clutter. If an ad agency designed this [and I doubt it did] they need to be fired. -

why are you taking it so hard that some of us think this video is subpar?
first impressions are huge, and if this video is our first commercial impression, then i feel like were not doing ourselves justice.
no need to get all ivory towerish on us "You don't get it and you never will"...
perhaps you could tell us why this video is so good ? -
No comment on the content, but I'd rather see them purchase REAL airtime on cable tv / networks with all of the millions of bucks that they have collected.
How many people will view this online "commercial"? -
All I can say about the commercial is, it's better than nothing, but not much.
-
This is a PPA recruiting video, not an attempt to sway public opinion or the actions of lawmakers. I guess they will find out whether it was useful or not based on recruitment of new members.
I would like to see a PSA actually addressing the issues, like the ones you see on TV saying "Call your representatives and tell them ...." -
The point of this video is to garner support for the PPA in the age range mentioned. It is obv geared towards people who frequent YouTube, myspace, and other like sites... so I don't see any problem with it.
If you weren't a member of this poker forum but were a recreational poker player and happened across this video, it might enlighten you to go to the website and sign up for membership. Therefore, who gives a shit about the graphics and how elementary it is. They need more members, and this gets their name out in the world a little more. -
just so i have some credibility with this post...YIKES @ the commercial, would not remotely persuade anyone other than a poker player to join in the fight...just no VALUE in it, regardless of production stuff or whatever...simply ineffective
but I sincerely appreciate the effort they have made thus far...they seem to be DOING SOMETHING...i do not know of a SINGLE THING anyone who merely criticized and mocked the commercial has done to help
i am so sick of seeing so many morons whine and complain so much about the problem without having done a single thing to help...replace the time you spend bitching with productive brainstorming about what they or you or we can do
smd -
all of us "morons" haven't collected millions in membership fees from poker players either...
-
PPA hit the nail right on its head with this one. Great job. I just "dugg" it. I personally look forward to seeing more where this came from.
F Beanie (that's a first for me)

My first impression is that it was horrible...i mean i was thinking about how ridiculous the cartoon characters were and not even paying attention to what was said....
After reading some of the posts i had my wife read it...she rarely plays poker and she agreed that the commercial was second rate and needs some drastic changes.....
I like you beanie, you are great for poker.......but this commercial if shown without a major overhaul makes poker players look like they are immature, uncreative and and young.
I dont think thats the message we want to send... -
I agree. They need to focus on people other than poker players. This law is an assault on every Americans rights. People who frequent online have probably already heard of the PPA. If they haven't signed up yet, then they are probably too lazy to do so no matter how awesome a commercial is. I say we need to direct this to other groups like the NRA, ect. Let them know their precious guns could be next. I don't think average Americans really understand how sleazily (is that a word?) this bill got snuck thru at the last minute. They need some major exposure. They should be on a media blitz with D'Amato soon. All the morning shows, Letterman, Leno, Conan, the View, and especially shows like The Colbert Report and The Daily Show. I'd even like to see them on Hardball and Keith Olbermans show.
-
I agree 100%. It was awful. The stupid card laughing at the end and the porn music was just terrible.
-
Olberman....LOL
He needs to go back to sports.... -
It's a nice break from serious news sometimes :)
-
PPA has their own youtube page. There is a lot of good videos on there.
-
It is a terrible ad. Looks like a couple high school students did it for a class project. Won't help at all.
-
If this commercial brings 10 more members to the PPA, then it was a success. I highly doubt any person with half a brain is goin gto view this ad and say to themselves, "wow the PPA used second rate cartoons, F thier cause...they must be wrong for not having hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on thier internet commercial." If anything I believe it will inspire the opposite, someone who views it with a sympathetic heart and a deep pocket may be inclined to fund a better commerical.
The point I am trying to get across to all of you is that this is a step....and a valid effort at least to protect our right to play poker. What have any of you done to help?

I love this ^^^^^. Lets make a commercial SO BAD that people will feel sorry for us and donate money. They should have had a dude with a mullet and no teeth wairing a shirt that said "poker rules"- that would have gotten even MORE sympathy.
The message I'm hearing over and over again is "you can't critisize this this becuase at least they are doing something and you are just sitting on your asses."
I am a member of the PPA and have donated money. Earlier this year I contacted them and volunteered my time and expertise as a lawyer and got completely blown off. I posted this experiance (along with our email exchange) and half a dozen people responded with stories about how they too tried to donate time or organize local efforts and got blown off too.
So yes, I've donated money, tried to offer help, and this commercial SUCKS. -
Tim...thanks for donating your money and offering your time, both were/are very generous of you. I in no way was stating that the quality of the video was great...simply I was applauding the efforts of the PPA by attempting to reach a broad audience with a clear message. I believe both of these objectives can be met by this commercial. THE END.

SPEAKING AS A FORMER MARKETING CONSULTANT AND ADVERTISING EXECUTIVE, THE AD HAS MANY PROBLEMS, TOO NUMEROUS TO DISCUSS.
SPEAKING AS AN INTERNET PLAYER WHO HAS HAD A FOUR-FIGURE BANKROLL CONFISCATED BY NETELLER & THE REPUBLICAN-FASCIST PROHIBITIONISTS, I ENCOURAGE ANY EFFORT TO BRING ATTENTION TO THIS ISSUE. -
