  8. Entertaining read. Reading about him spreading his money around (the bank, mom's freezer, etc.) reminded me of the time he was crashing with us at the card castle in LA and for the better part of the week he was just walking around with a sick look on his face. Totally convinced he'd lost a wrapper, he had us all thinking our buddy Mitch had pulled a fast one on him. After several days the money turned up stashed away in his backpack in the closet or something. lol Phil, you're a trip.

The real takeaway seems to be this book recommendation though -- Fortune's Formula, anyone read it?

  9. I'm forty eight yrs old and took me quite a few failed homerun swings before I realized this same thing. It is soooo true - great article.
  10. That was a good read.

While you can criticize Laak in comparison to some of the other upper echelon players in the game, you can't really knock a guy who built himself back up from nothing essentially playing games the whole way up.

    reading.
  12. When I first met Phil, it was when he was living in San Jose, back around 2002. Dutch was renting out his room while he was in New York. He let Dutch use his car, which was the most brutal poverty level vehicle around. I asked Dutch why does Phil have such a POS car if he is so successful at poker? Dutch told me that when it comes to edges and Phil has one, then he is very liberal with that money, but for things that aren't essential (such as a vehicle), he is the biggest tightwad ever. After reading that article I now see why.

  13. great read I need to be more like phil

  14. I heard he won Jen Tilly in a late night poker game with Sam Simon.
