It was 12:30am, near the end of level 7. Only about 45 players remained from a field of 230, with the top 27 being in the money. Blinds were 300/600 with an ante of 75. I had about $16,000 in chips, with an M of about 10. The blinds were going to be going up in about 10 minutes so I was trying to find a way to win a pot before that. Then this came up:
UTG opens by limping for 600.
Everyone folds to me on the button.
I have A
Q
and raise to 2800 total.
Small Blind calls.
UTG calls.
Pot = 9675
Flop: A
K
7
Small Blind bets 10000
UTG folds
Action to me.
This put me in a tough spot. I generally dont like calling off my whole stack with only top pair with no draw, but it was late in the tourney and I was beginning to get a bit short stacked (though not critically, yet). I didnt think that the SB had a huge hand, like AA, KK or AK given that he didnt reraise preflop, and I usually dont give people credit for a flopped flush, given how unlikely that is. I had been playing at the same table with this guy for a couple hours, and saw him put all his chips in twice (without being short stacked) on pure bluffs, so I couldnt automatically assume he had a big made hand. I thought that his most likely holdings might be something like AxJ
, AxT
, KxQ
, maybe Q
Jx or QxJ
, or even QQ though TT with a diamond draw. So, given his possible distribution, the size of the pot and my remaining chip count, I pushed in for my last $13K. He called and showed AA. It figures that the case Ace would come on the flop and get me in trouble. Do you agree with my call, or would folding have been a better decision to ensure survival and look for a better spot to get the money in?

i agree. i get all in there also. good play -> bad result. thats unfortunate but i dont think you really made a big mistake based on his play and your read. better luck next time
