I have a lil over 30 bb and limp with QJ. Flop checked around and I hit a Q on the turn. I 3x and he insta calls. He bets big on river and I fold. I was thinking he flopped a set and didnt want to get anymore in there. Two questions, 1 should I just have folded preflop and 2 do I make the call on the river. -
Board [4c 5s 5h Qd 6h]
You all limped for 40. This usually means no one's sitting on a monster (AA, KK, etc) but is by no means a guarantee. Depending on the player, they might limp here even with AQ so it's something to consider.
Should you have folded QJ Pre? Maybe, but I'd say your bigger mistake was not raising it when you played it. With one limper before you, they're either trapping a monster (less likely) or playing a moderate hand (one similar to yours, or maybe small pair/weak ace) out of position.
You raise here, if you get reraised - you consider folding. If they flat call, you check the flop -which would be a good place to continuation bet on that particular flop of 4 5 5, and hope you can take it down.
As far as the river fold, i'd look at it like this.
The hands you're worried about him having are - 5x, AQ, KQ, 44, 66, 78. These all fall within the limp pre flop range... but some of the hands are reraising hands on the turn, like the 5x. for that particular amount of chips, and the way he played it, it's quite likely he's bluffing a missed draw ... he could've had 76 to begin with .. missed made a pair of sixes and bet it. Or, a worse queen... Q10 for example.
For 320 chips, you probably should've called since he just flat called you on the turn. to me that screams someone who's still drawing out... and if he got there god bless him.
BUT that's just how i'd play it im sure others would see it differently. -
ty for the good insight

Overlimping the button is fine there imo. I mite bet the turn a little less since there really aren't that many hand you're getting value from but I doubt it makes much of a difference. Without reads I probably call river since it's a $1 tourny and I could see him betting a worse Q or even like 77 just cause he doesn't know what to do w/ it.
