I was thinking about going to the horse track down in Tampa. They offer poker games there. They have all the games that Ultimate Bet offers. According to their website, the betting structure is such that there is 2 dollar straight betting. If you are playing stud there is a 50 cent ante. They dont tell you what the stakes are. What do they mean by straight betting? Is it where you bet a minimum of 2 dollars on all streets? If thats the case, then that would get pretty damn expensive. What would you recommend starting with as far as buying into a game? Thanks for any and all advice.

thats some high stakes poker, you'll need a HUGE bankroll.

I am not looking to play there every day. My parents go there occasionally to bet on the horses. I just thought I would go there to play while they do their thing. Unless I had a winning session that day, I would only be able to play maybe once or twice a month. I just wondered what the betting means and how much would be recommended to sit down with. I would most likely play stud or stud hi lo.

some of the biggest names in poker play that game. guys like ivey, brunson, chan, reese, greenstein, etc.
play with caution. -
lol your talking about the tampa bay downs lol i work there as a dealer. the betting means its a min of 2 on all streets cap at 8. but listem to me that is degenerate poker. it's not like on line low limit. these guys are fucking junkys. you will get at least 4 people in every hand betting till the end no matter what they have. seriously i would not play cash games there but we got a nice tourney. 40 buy in 2500 in starting chips with 15 min blinds. good luck if you go and if you do look me up my names eric olson.

Thanks Eric. I will do that. Would you mind emailing me? dtokar@tampabay.rr.com What time do the tournies start and how long do they normally last?

2 straight is bingo. You basically pay 2$ a card to see what kind of hand you can catch. The first rule of 2 straight is dont look at the board, just listen and say "Call". The 2nd rule is never fold. And the 3rd rule is never fold.

..and the 4th rule is never fold

I just saw an advertisement for Tampabay Downs and they said that there is a 20 dollar buy in. You wont be playing many hands with stakes that high. Thats just crazy.
-
I didnt ask for rules on how to play. I just asked if anyone know what they were talking about in the bet structure and how much you should buy in with stakes that high.

is this for real?

I believe from reading other posts about poker in FL casinos the highest games they can spread are 1/2 limit. Obviously you will not need a monster bankroll to play any of the 1/2 games they are spreading. However, depending on what casino you are going to they offer a variety of tournaments w/ a great variance of buy-ins. I would recommend calling the casino you are planning on going to and getting the tournament schedule if that is something you are interested in. If Im wrong please correct me, I am from Iowa and have never played or had intersest in playing poker in and FL card rooms. Hopefully that answers your qeuestions MF.

Darbong,
Thanks for your response. I just want to play. I played one time at the Hardrock Casino in Tampa and absolutely loved it. I didnt leave a winner but I had a great time while there. The stakes at that time were .25/.50. I was thinking about trying some live stud games. But the antes at the horse track is .50. Thats expensive. The ante at the 1/2 table on pokerstars is only .10. The problem I have with tournaments is invest 40 or 50 bucks and only getting paid 1st 2nd or 3rd. I am not crazy about the idea of a sng only paying 1st and 2nd. Whereas in a sng online you can be paid in the top 3. Which I would be more comfortable with. I am not too concerned about having a bankroll because I wont be able to play every day like I can online. How much should I sit down with at a table with the stakes that I mentioned for the horse track?
