what do you think makes you unsuccessful?
what do you think you have trouble with most? -
Honestly, for me in mutli tables....it's changing tables. When I am at a table, I can get a decent read on how a player plays and take notes and adjust to playing styles. It takes me a few hands to get adusted at a new table if I don't know the players. Who's aggresive? Has he been that way the whole time? Is this guy likely to go all in with pocket 5s? etc... Later in the tournament you don't always have the luxury of waiting to find out a players style.
The best multi I ever finished at, I only had to go to 2 tables...the opening one I was at and the final.
For single table, my biggest problem is laying down good hands to aggresive players. And not being aggresive enough myself. -
LOL, looking to add to your buddy list?
To answer seriously, i find that I have a hard time finding the balance between too conservative and too aggressive. I play tight naturally, but it doesn't allow me to build my stack much unless I'm getting bitch slapped with good cards, so I force myself to play aggressively, which I'm getting better at, but often continue betting into a pot too long when someone else has hit a hand, sometimes overcommitting myself. -
I rarely play any tournies other than sit-n-go's, and I'd say I money in at least 60-70% of them ($20 sng on UB) but I have a hard time getting first. Heads up play is super important since the difference between second and first can be thousands of dollars in a MTT!!!

1. lack of patience- in both the actual tourney and the time spent studying and practicing mtt play
2. i found i lack the competitive nature that a lot of great tourney players have, though i by no means want to lose. But (IMO) in order to win as much as some guys do, you have to be extremely competitive, to the point where the money doesn't matter as much as the win. it's for this reason i've practically stopped playing mtts, other than very small buyins and freerolls, since i don't have to worry about the money when its free. -
not being aggressive enough in stealing situations with marginal to above marginal (but still crappy) hands. picking up blinds is way too important and sometimes i'm too tentative to raise with something like QTs or A7s in the cutoff in an unopened pot even if i know that the blinds will put their hand down because i'm afraid of someone coming over the top. when it comes down to it (getting close to the bubble or just ITM), it's probably better to try to make a move here and hope for folds or at least try to race then to keep blinding down and wait for good cards in good position. if you lose, well shit happens, and if you win the blinds or a race then you just built yourself a (hopefully if you were not very shortstacked) very nice stack to work with.
edit: actually im not *that* unsuccessful , but i have never made the final table at a $100+ buy-in MTT so i guess that means i'm unsuccessful. -
I think my biggest problem is over playing top pair, and not mixing up my game enough. I guess I lack the testicular fortitude to call a raise with sooted connectors to try and hit a miracle flop, or steal a pot. Recently my tournies have ended because of those very hands.

I think what I see is that players are just not patient enough........I use to have this problem, but now I'm the most patient guy in the world, sometimes folding until I get down to 3 BB's.
A good standard example of a a poor play would be blinds are at 50-100, and you have a stack of 900 chips, you are in seat 5 and it folds to you. You have A-9 and you push, you get called by the big stack with AQ and your out..........bad bad play......don't put yourself in a position where if you get called your definitely dominated.

I don't know what my problem is. I am a good cash game player, decent SNG player but below average MTT player. I always get right around the bubble and bust out. I am always short stacked and forced to go all in on a coin flip. I rarely win those coin flips. I have placed in MTT's before but never in a top 3 position. I have the patience and I try to be aggressive later in the tournament. Anyways I am working on it and I can only get better. I plan on playing on Supers P5 league tournament and I hope to improve along with being a member of RPT.
