it really doesn't seem that hard to me, i mean you are always going to have software issues and customer service problems, but the vast majority of sites seem to be constantly stuffing up the simplest of things and making themselves constantly look bad.
is it really that hard? -
Why doesnt a group of the top online pro's start a site? They can all be pros and make a killing off the business. Shocked this hasnt happened yet to be honest.
-
Probably because creating (business plan, software, servers), running, and marketing the site is significantly harder then sitting around asking how hard it is.
-
Or find a smaller site with solid software and buy it. Then rebrand it, add servers and add personnel (IT, Customer Service, Marketing).

I can't see how poker sites can lose money - especially in this scenario since half of the startup costs are gone. They take rake regardless of who wins. They get serious cash flow. -
its not that hard to run........ but it is hard to get clients/players onto your site. This has been attempted daniel negreanu tried this and got bought out. His site was not doing very well full contact poker i believe. Its gonna be really hard to pull ppl away from the big three because they have it all down for instance depositing and ppl like to deal things with what they are familiar with. Cake poker may be on the rise though. But yes think about all the aspects of what it takes its tough to be a success.

Full Tilt spent TONS of $ on advertising, bonuses, sponsorships, development, etc. And it took them years before it really took off. Maybe not hard to run, but tough to get off the ground. There are dozens of Pokerchamps out there for every Fulltilt or Stars.

what about chanpoker or what ever that is
-
The Cryptologic network recently closed and the likes of William Hill, SunPoker went to ipoker, and others went to Boss Network. IMO crypto was far better software than ipoker or boss so im sure someone could bet hold of it and create a semi-decent alternative.

Pokerchamps is still alive, its just called Betfair now.

I think the to set up the software would be pretty easy, attracting the players would depend really on what the site had to offer, would start off slow but through word of mouth and advertising you would see vast increases in traffic over perhaps the 2nd year running it. The biggest constraint is financial. Keeping however many $millions in the accounts, would need huge bank backing, which wouldn't be easy to get imo.

I'm assuming mathclub is mostly talking about stuff that everyone wants, yet we don't get, or it takes us years until an update gets us it. i.e. sychnronized breaks, auto-addon, sit out next big blind button, option to remove graphic for empty seats, unjoin all waitlists button
Sites like Stars know that people want this; in fact, I remember Bryan (or maybe Scotty?) saying they are prioritizing synchronized breaks right now. I just wonder how hard is it, really, to implement it. I would think that one person working a 40-hour week should be able to alter code to make half of these things work.
Apparently I'm wrong though. -
Had a friend start a pokersite on the pokerroom platform. The software alone was over 500k not to mention advertising, live marketing and tons of other start up expenses. The site started to roll and left when the US govt stepped into everyones business.

One of the biggest barriers of entry is brand recognition and player loyalty - why would someone switch from FT, UB, or PS if they are already satisfied with the games there?
