Ok, this hand came up in the WSOP seat espn final tourney.. how could I have played this hand any differently? 2 hours into the tournament and the blinds are 100/150 with 180 players left out of 500. I'm at about 7k chips and the avg. is just below 3k. I'm in the BB with A
K
, there were 3 callers and the guy in mid position raises it up to 500. I call and the rest of the table folds.
Flop comes: K
9
4
, he checks, I had put him on Qs or Js so I bet 500 to see where I'm at, he calls.
Turn Comes: A
, I figure top 2 pair is good here so I bet out 1k, he calls. He has me covered by about 200 chips btw (if I win this hand im in 1st place)
River: 5
, he goes all in and I call. Guy shows A
J
nut flush.. Where did I play this hand wrong? Or was I just extremely unlucky. If the Ace on the turn didnt show up or if another diamond came I couldv'e got off this hand easily. When he went all in on the river I pretty much had to call since I had so many chips in the pot.. Anyways, can anyone tell me how I couldve played this better or where I went wrong?

Yes, you got to be very suspicious when he checked after the flop and then just flat out calls with your bets and all in on the river. If you would have taken this into consideration , then you can easily laid down that hand.

Good point, how should I have played it then? Check on the turn and see what he does instead of betting?

No, I would probably bet on the turn BUT.......I would bet in a way that I wouldn't be pot committed like the situation that you are in. Honestly, when reading your post, I knew instinctly without even reading that he has probably flopped the flush if not the nutz flush. If you are not pot committed and he goes all in, you can fold.

if you were smart you woulda pushed pre flop and took everyones chips. Betting 500 on a all diamond flop to see where you're at? thats pretty dumb. if you woulda checked you woulda gotten alot more information about what he has. that points him in position to do something and chances are he woulda checked or bet a low amount. anyways you could of cut all this out by moving in pre flop.

I dont know about pushing preflop with 7K, but I DO think I would have reraised him. He makes it 500, Id make it about 2K...if he is going to call that with A-J, then youre just gonna get unlucky agaist a bad player...Remember that AK is a drawing hand, not a made hand and therefore, you really want to give yourself a chance to just take down a nice 600-700 pot right there. Once the flop comes, I think you have to take a shot at it, I mean, you raised preflop, you should be betting after, especially with the pair. His call is what would scare me...you have to know that he either has the A of diamonds or already has his flush...why else would he JUST call? The turn does screw you a little though...an Ace is the only card that can really force you to commit massive chips...Also, when he calls your 1k bet on the turn, there is only one question to ask..."Does he have another diamond to go with his A of diamonds?" The answer to that can only come from your read of the player...sorry about the result :-(

ditto super... reraise preflop.
the guy probably wont call a hefty reraise with AJ.
edit - that kinda sounded like "hindsight advice." You obviously don't know he's got AJ. But by reraising with the AK, you are going to make him make the decision - and his decision should help you define his hand... using what u know about him as a player, loose, etc., and what kind of hands he'll raise/call vs. raise/fold with (or even raise/reraise).
