Thank you for getting in touch with me to express your views on
Internet gambling.
As you know, Internet gambling sites provide avenues for many
individuals to gamble on poker, blackjack, sports, and other
activities. I agree with you that such sites provide a means for adults
to engage in activities that many believe should be left to individual
judgment and discretion. However, I object to the fact that many of
these "casinos" are chartered offshore and therefore are not subject
to the jurisdiction of U.S. tax authorities or consumer protection
authorities. This is certainly an issue that Congress needs to address,
and I will work to ensure that it preserves individual freedom while
maintaining proper consumer protection.
Thank you for writing to me about this important topic. I look
forward to hearing from you again regarding this or other issues.
Sincerely,
Jim Cooper

If we (gov) were smart enough to Tax it we wouldn't give a fuck who it hurt.
Cigarettes = Kills people = Ok
Selling alcohol at places you can only drive to = kills people = Ok
Driving my motorcyle without my helmet = kills only me = Not in my state
Internet poker =kills no one = GG govment -
My dear son, rules are merely suggestions.
Hasn't anyone ever told you that?
Moses gave us the 10 Suggestions, not the 10 Commandments.
No one tells me what to do. -
My reply is simple.
Then states need to be more willing to allow casinos to open or the government needs to give the right to US based casinos such as MGM etc the right to produce online gambling sites.
Seems to me government is just wanting their money.... -
Let's parse this:
However, I object to the fact that many of
these "casinos" are chartered offshore and therefore are not subject
to the jurisdiction of U.S. tax authorities or consumer protection
authorities. This is certainly an issue that Congress needs to address,
and I will work to ensure that it preserves individual freedom while
maintaining proper consumer protection.
I object ...shouldn't it be,we the people I represent? Do they really object? Show us all the complaint letters that drove you to this conclusion.
jurisdiction of U.S. tax authorities - Why should they be subject to U.S.? --- they're in another country. You want them subject to U.S. tax, then allow it.
consumer protection authorities - again, what consumers are begging for this? (perhaps the 'it's rigged' fringe?)
Congress needs to address -Congress NEEDs to address? No they don't. Congress needs to mind their own business, and there's plenty of other business that should be handled rather than this.
preserves individual freedom - the only thing stated I agree with. I hope he really means it (but somehow, for some reason, I don't think he does.) -
