I think it is extremely important to remember that it was the Republican party that sponsered, pushed thru, and passed the anti-gaming legislation that is such a hot topic right now. So if you want to do something about it, register to vote and vote Democratic in the upcoming election. If you want to do more, talk with everyone you encounter about how the Republican party is responsible for this and maybe they will register too. It isn't a quick solution, but given time, it will work. Republicans will always be trying to legislate their base's morality on the rest of us...Stand up for your rights people!!!!
VOTE -
If I were going to pick one (and only one) issue to base my vote on, it certainly would not be poker. Online poker is a passion of mine and a second income, but I think it is extremely important to remember that there are more important things in this world than online gaming. Obviously, I will continue to lobby my reps to represent my wishes and beliefs, but I will not vote for someone of any party who I believe will do way more damage to my country simply because their opponent voted for this or any other anti-gambling bill.
It seems obvious that you have some agenda beyond poker online, or you would advise people to simply vote out the politicians from both parties that have supported anti-online gambling measures. Also, if you had no agenda you would not automatically urge support for one particular party (there are more than two). In fact, the party that would be most receptive to our side on this issue is the Libertarian Party, in general. The only thing that would make me consider voting for a Democrat if I were a single-issue online poker voter (ie, an idiot who can't be bothered with any of the more important issues in this country) is the fact that if a Democrat can find any way to regulate something in order to tax it, he will. -
I ain't never had a terrorist blow up my car but I did have a Republican take my job. Guess which one pisses me off.
-
There are many much more important issues that make me not want to vote republican, but since this is a poker site, I posted about poker. Other issues include being mislead into a war with Iraq, giving tax breaks to companies that move their plants out of the country, Dubai controlled port security, money for access scandals like Abramhoff, Delay etc. the list goes on. But some people don't care about politics, until it affects them, or their hobbies, like poker. So I wanted to let all poker players which party pushed this bill through. It sounds as if you would prefer to not have people know it was a Republican bill thru and thru.
As far as voting for Liberttarian Party, yall can waste all the votes you want on them. Sure their platform is appealing, but face it, the US is a two party system and voting the third party is throwing your vote away...
Is the idea of online sites paying taxes on their profits that abhorent to you smartplays? Seems like a minor thing to ensure the continuation of a profitable industry.
Again, I urge everyone to get out and vote Democratic in the upcoming election.
q-_-p
PS. Republicans Suck
Agenda boy signing out.... -
Props to g- -p. Thats all for now.
-
certainly they moved to second on the list;-)
I am certainly not pro terrorist -
republicans do not equal anti-gaming. The ports bill was passed by both sides. No politician would dare vote against the ports bill unless they are stupid. Frist was smart. Called in some favors. Got his legistlation attached to the legistlative royal flush. Nobody would dare to go against it. It would be be going all in on a one outer.
-
lol. Have you ever heard of the term Frist (R) Fucked?
-
there is therapy for you people, there was no debate and the Dems wanted to negotiate. Frist said no. Frist is not a democrat. I can't believe you can exist in life being that naive.
-
Holy cow, I don't know how many times I have to post this same thing, but here goes again:
Democrat Republican Independent
Aye 115 200 1
Nay 76 17 0
Absent 10 12 0
That is for the actual gaming bill, HR4411. I do agree that this port security act was sleezy by the republicans, but, this is CLEARLY a non-partisian issue as far as you can see from the vote tally above. BOTH parties dropped the ball as far as I am concerned; the republican's just dropped it a little more then the dems.
More details: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=h2006-363 -
It really is a Democrats vs Republian issue. The Republicans who contol Congress wrote the bill, then attached it to the Safe Ports Bill so that any Democrat who voted against it they could run attack ads about how the Democrat is not for safe ports. They are in charge, and need to feel the wrath of poker players everywhere....
-
they can't hear you over the sucking sound of the Republicans freedom vacuum.
-
LOL at those voting stats man.....totally different vote.
-
"I aint never had"
maybe thats why you lost your job, hillbilly -
Look, as I posted above, I agree that that was a sleezy thing to do. But it also sucks that 100+ dems voted for the gaming bill that WASNT attached to anything. Now I'm not saying the republican's are great (thats farrrrrrrrrrrr from what I'm saying), but what I don't think we should be doing is going after one party.
I think we need to attack this without any previous emotional ties to either party. Folks from both side of the isle voted against online gaming (in the actual bill, not the one they were forced to vote for), and they also did so back a while ago:

Your heart is in the right place, but saying this is just the beginning is a little naive.
The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act of 1997 was passed by the Senate on July 23, 1998, by a vote of 90-10. This act amends the Federal criminal code to prohibit and set penalties for: (1) placing, receiving, or otherwise making a bet or wager via the Internet or any other interactive computer service in any State; and (2) engaging in the business of betting or wagering through the Internet or any such service. There are exceptions for state lotteries, horse racing, and (yes) jai-alai.
BTW, the Senate majority leader in 1998 was Tom Daschle
The beginning occurred many years ago. Now, if you say this is just the beginning for players to begin to recognize our rights are in jeopardy and its time to take up the cause.......... </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
We need to look at INDIVIDUALS, not political parties. There are alot of dems that voted against gaming, there are alot of dems that voted for gaming. Same goes for the republicans (just less voting for), but what we need to do as players is this:
LOOK AT WHAT YOUR LOCAL REP VOTED FOR, and then make your decision. Don't vote party lines. That's what wrong with this country. There is no deciding based on individuality and thought, its always "which party does he belong to." If there is a dem that believes what I believe in, he gets my vote. If there is a repub that believes what I believe in, he gets my vote.
Long story short, look at the issues and the person, NOT the political party! -
Too freakin funny Beanie.....
-
If you read my post, I believe I pointed out that: "That is for the actual gaming bill, HR4411," which is entirely where my point comes from.
-
you are missing the point brianyut, attacking the Repuclicans and the Christian Right Wing is exactly what we need to do. They are taking over our country and trampling over our freedoms. I agree with you not all Republicans are bad but when you sleep with dogs you will get fleas.
-
I understand what you mean, I hate the fact that the party is trying to "legislate morality." In fact, I think that while that is what got them in office, it will eventually lead to their downfall when people get sick of it.
But my point holds for both sides. There are many people that vote republican just because they are "conservative" (the republican party isnt even conservative anymore -- but thats another story). Same goes for the dems. In fact, thats largely what created this whole mess to begin with... people voting along repub party lines.
I just wish that everyone would look past the party and consider what each person has to say. I also wish that political leaders wouldn't follow in step with the party agenda. Maybe I'm an idealist, I don't know. Maybe I just made up that word, I don't know.
I'm just a frustrated middle of the road kind of guy with no one to vote for :( -
Do you guys know for sure if we were to all vote democrat and they win. Will Online poker then be regulated or fixed? I doubt it.
This questions needs to be brought up at a debate between the politicians that are running for this coming presidency. -
at this point the die is cast for me, it is about my eroding personal liberities. I actually would have voted for the Republican governor for the State of MN who I will admit has done a fine job. But its message time.
-
beanie is on the right track...---call out the republicans for teaming up with the Christian Right wings LUNATICS...i mean that...
this needs to be a public call out, like Mike Sexton on Leno...something similar, maybe not that grand, but it must be very public. A line needs to be made between republicans and these wacked out Right wing Christians, because that christian faction is getting much too powerful in our country where religion and politics should not mix. -
brianyut do not try to convince beanie-hes pretty delusional about this bullshit and this whole republicans vs democrats stance is the one is tearing this country apart. You are dead on when you say this is an individual thing.
Why would you try to reason with someone who is more concerned with his ability to gamble than terrorists killing thousands of his fellow innocent citizens? -
i'm going under the assumption that a large majority of the people on this forum aren't right wing fundamentalist christians...there may be a few. i'm not suggesting that Sexton call the right wing christians lunatics on television, i'm merely suggesting that an attempt is made to help the public recognize that differences between the two and that the original goals of the two groups are at odds with each other.--> this can be done in a way that is not offensive to religious lunatics
-
we are the majority now, you will see that in 5 weeks. I go to church every Sunday man, I know who the lunatics are.
