Couple of days ago I had asked a question basically along the lines of can one control bad beat and that was a dumb question. I had asked that after losing to a really bad beat.
One of the p5 members TheMayor basically said be decision oriented and not results oriented as it would be profitable in the long run. I cant begin to tell you how easy it makes it when you do lose to a bad beat.
As usual i am playing the 40k guaranteed on party last night and ended finishing 51st. Come so close so many times, hopefully one of these days i can crack it. All my moves in the game yesterday were decision oriented and when i did lose on the 51st spot to another bad beat, I was not fuming at all and basically said hey i made the right decision and endured a bad beat.
So many times I have seen folks be so results oriented that it takes a toll emotionally when you are dealt a bad beat, we start cussing and making a tilt move and losing.
Thanks for the well timed tip "theMayor".
Question: Yesterday i am in the middle position and ge dealt AQ ofsuit and the blinds are 4k/8k and the average chip stack is 175000 and i have 208000. After the blinds are posted, gets folded to me and i raise to 30000, everyone folds and the bigblind who already has posted 8k and has 112000 remaining, pushes All-in.
I have been at this table for a while and had a good read on her as she had been making all ins with KQ, K10, KJ and sucking out. So i thought for a while and called here all in. Even if i lost i still have 100000 left and at this stage where almost every hand some one is allin, i felt i could double up.
Question is, did i make the right decision making the call with AQ and lo and behold she showed k10 diamonds and caught a 10...
I think i did...
thanks guys. great forum -
I don't know that your question, or any poker question, can be answered definitively. In reading your post I had some thoughts that you may find useful.
1. Obv your initial raise is standard, but you didn't really mention your table image. Had you been stealing a lot? Had you folded to resteals when challenged? What size bet compared to the BB had been taking down pots. Others may disagree, but you may be able to take down the blinds in many cases with a raise to 20K-24K (in general, not in this case). Makes it a little easier to get away from good-but-not-great hands such as AQ.
2. You had a good read on the player as someone who had shown a willingness to get involved with marginal hands. But, everyone makes hands from time to time, and if she is aware of her table image she's probably aware her pushes are going to get called (again, not in this case specifically, but in general).
3. Ultimately you've got to put her on a range of hands here. I'm no expert in this regard, but you're a small underdog to any pair, and crushed by AA, KK, QQ, and AK, all of which are within your opponents range. On a positive note, you're dominating any Ax and a solid favorite over mixed broadway cards.
4. I think moving towards a decision-oriented model is certainly positive. So using that model, how does your decision stack up? You have to call 90K to win ~156K. 1.73:1. To me, it seems like a good chance to take a shot at building your stack, based on the pot odds, your opponents range, and your read. If you win the pot, you've got ~2x the avg. stack fairly deep and in a good position to make a run at the FT. If you lose the pot, you still have 100k left which is short but not hopeless.
Based on all of it, I think your call makes sense.

I really had a tight image and every time it was a showdown had bigger pocket pairs than my opponents. I think at that point of the tourament with the blinds at 4000/8000 and ante 75 even a 110000 stack for here has an m close to 8 and you are right i was crushed if she held pocket AA, KK or QQ etc. the only reason i made this call even though i was not getting anything close to 3:1 was the chance to get away from the pack to the 300000 chip level and be close to the chip lead and based on my read on here and my tight image...
Thanks for the response though
