i was watchin 2 Months 2 Million the other day and the subject of reverse implied odds came up and i realised i have no idea what they are! anyone got any ideas coz it sounds confusin lol
Thanks -
its similar to implied odds but basicly the opposite
for example, if u have a small FD on the turn, and ur facing a bet, so generally u start looking at pot odds and implied odds. say theres 2k in the pot and the bet is 2k. so u have to call 2k to win 4k so u need 33% equity. so u dont have the right pot odds since ur equity is only about 20%.
then u think about implied odds. if u hit ur flush how many chips will u get from him on the river. when we are calling our 2k we need to be winning 8k when we hit our flush, so we have to feel we can get another 4k on the river for implied odds to make this a call.
however then theres something called reverse implied odds which is basicly when u hit ur flush and ur going to lose a big pot. like he might be on a bigger flush draw, or he might have a set and the flush pairs the board. or maybe u have the A high flush draw and instead of hitting ur flush an A comes on the river and u decide ur going to call a big bet on the river. in all these cases u might hit ur outs and end up losing more chips.
so if the person bets 2k on the turn and has like 5k behind. if u think hes going to stack off if u hit, at first glance it might seem like u have the right implied odds to call since u can get another 5k when u hit so ur calling 2k to win 9k. but u have to take into account that there are reverse implied odds for when u hit and run into a better hand and so even if u get him to put in the 5k everytime u hit it could still be a losing call on the turn.
obviously alot depends on ur hand and the board, if u have the nut flush draw the reverse implied odds are lower since u cant run into a higher flush, ur only worry is a full house. but whenever ur making a call with a somewhat marginal hand u have to think about how many chips u might lose on the next street if u hit what ur looking for and still end up with the 2nd best hand -
okse you rock, you didn't have to provide such a clear explanation to a player who may very well use that against you but you did and it probably helped many folks gain some understanding. thanks for sharing

good explanation Okse. FWIW, I mostly considered reverse implied odds for when I make the hand I'm looking for but its not the best hand and I end up paying off a huge bet. This is pretty crucial in PLO\deep stacked\cash IMO and is the reason 2nd nut hands are so dangerous. exercise extreme pot control :).

Yeah, first class post okse. Thanks.
Also congratulations on your recent scores, you seem like your on the up & up. -
right thats a great explanation thanks a lot okse. is there a way of calculatin these odds at all? or is it really complicated maths? haha
